"Smokies Ablaze"
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

With sunset fast approaching, I sped up to Clingman's Dome where I found a very promising sky. Alas, the peak became shrouded by a cloud as soon as I set up my tripod, reducing visibility to nil. I hopped in my Subaru and found this clearing a short way down the road, which provided this window of the clouds catching fire for a few brief moments.

"Mingo's Deluge"
Cherokee Indian Reservation, NC

At an estimated height of 150-200', Mingo Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls I have ever seen. As I felt its cool mist blow over me and listened to its roar drown out all other sound, I was extremely grateful to have access to this special place. Respect it.

"Paradise Grove"
Giant City State Park

I had been eyeing this clearing for years but never found the right conditions. This year's Redbud bloom was the best I have ever seen. While waiting on sunset it briefly started raining; I turned around and watched this rainbow appear! Knowing I had little time to capture it, I scrambled to find a workable composition and captured this seconds before the rainbow faded.

The Subway, reached only by a long and arduous hike into the backbountry, features some of the most unique rock formations in the world. I made the trek during leaf-off which allowed me to capture the swirls in the water.

Zion is full of amazing geological formations, in this scene I liked the way both the sandstone and the water sweep toward the Cottonwood trees.

The Narrows are simply incredible! Even though I was only able to spend one day shooting them I still walked away with several keepers. It was about 38 degrees inside the canyon and the water was so high I had to rent a dry suit, which I was very glad to have during the sections where the water was up to my neck. I only turned back when I reached a part that was so deep I would have had to swim.

Angel Falls is along one of Zion's back country hikes, which requires a permit and is limited to only 50 people per day. At a round-trip length of 8 miles and a 400 foot descent into the canyon, this was definitely one of the most grueling hikes I've made. It was easily worth it though, with this being one of many jaw droppingly gorgeous scenes along the way!

I spent the first week of November in the amazing Zion National Park! On the first day I drove around familiarizing myself with the park and was drawn to the sandstone washes alongside the road in the eastern part of the park, where color was at peak and scenes like this were plentiful.

Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area

I found this pool of the most intense blue water I've ever seen (outside the Ozarks) in one of the least visited parts of Bell Smith, which complements the yellow foliage very well.

Silver Mines Recreation Area
Mark Twain National Forest

An old dam used by a turn of the century silver mine along the St. Francis River. This place is really cool and makes me want to invest in a kayak!
