I took this back in the winter of 2009-2010 and just now applied some effects in Picasa. I'm addicted to Picasa. I've been labeling faces for hours....

So what's the story? I went walking around grandma's, found a glass bottle in the grass, brought it up to the swing, and I forgot it there for a few days. End of story. :)

I found these eyes only lightly outlined in my drawing book, so I finished them and added a face around them in pen. I'm always amazed at how much variation a pen can have

I usually ignore my pink marker, but it was the only one I felt like using on the lil girl in the nightgown. I'm not sure where she came from. I started with her eyes and went from there. Then her eyes reminded me of baby Morgan's eyes :)

He really does have an amazing collections of cars that he quite often lines up in a giant, snaking traffic jam. He also takes at least one or two to bed with him and everywhere he goes. They are his currency, as his momma says :)

I blurred the areas that are not the focal points to simulate what your eyes would see if you were actually there.

Scott Westerfeld is one of my very favorite authors due to his "Uglies" series. So howww did I miss his three newest books?!
Just a few days ago I stumbled upon "Leviathan" in my library and, surprise surprise, it was written by my ol' pal Scott-la! (<-- Uglies reference)

In less than a week I completed all 3 of the books, as well as this drawing of Deryn on the back of the living, breathing, ship during a hurricane. For those of you who have read Goliath, it's a scene from the time that Alek got his head injury...

As wonderful and more-than-adequate-in-detail as Keith Thompson's illustrations are, I felt like I needed to show what I saw when I was reading. There are other scenes that I'm itching to draw but this one took priority tonight.

Excerpt from Goliath that inspired the drawing:
pg. 263
"The hood of her flight suit was pulled up, her wet hair pasted to her forehead, baring the angles of her face.
She frowned. "Are you going daft again?"
Alek shook his head but his eyelids were heavy. He felt his body stop shivering, giving up its struggle against the cold. His thoughts began to fade into the roar of the world around him....."

NOTE: My original intention for this drawing was to be half pencil/half computer. The flash on my camera washed out some of the dark areas so I did what I could to make it look as much like the real drawing as I could. Except for the super bright highlights, this is pretty much what the drawing looks like without computer processing. Someday I'll make a full color vector out of this :D

Also, foreshortening is nootttt a strong suit of mine, and this is one of my first shots at it. I hate that part lol but it's fairly easy to ignore

I pulled this old photo out of my pile of folders to share another post-process technique I have used to make up for bad backgrounds.

This time I took a previous session's test photo of a blanket and placed it behind the layer of the new photo. I erased the old background to reveal the blanket and used a colorize action to turn the blanket to a blue that matched the blue of the new photo. To help transition between the two layers, I used a blur paintbrush and ran it across the edges of the white blanket where it met the new background. I found this to be much much faster than cloning a new background (see the previous upload in my photostream) although with this technique you have to be careful that the background doesn't look fake and too different from the foreground. (I'm still debating whether this example works or not but I mainly uploaded it for the technique itself, not my first attempt at executing the technique. If you take a photo of your backdrop before the current session, then you have a much better chance of it looking natural when you use this technique.)
