Virginian heritage unit

The Virginian heritage unit is seen stopped at CP "Rockdale" at Inman Yard, awaiting a new crew to complete its journey from Knoxville to Macon. CSX's ex ACL mainline exits their parallel Tilford Yard via a tunnel under Inman, and here we see local train A727 departing Tilford, bound for Union City. In Georgia, Norfolk Southern has 4,761 employees and operates 1,778 miles of track.

Monongahela heritage unit

Here's the Monongahela heritage unit working as the Bailey Helper, helping to push a loaded coal train out of Bailey Mine (near Waynesburg, Pa). The Monongahela Railway built this line, known as the Manor Branch, in 1984 to serve the huge Bailey coal mine. This is where #8025 fits in the most, working right at "home"!

Savannah & Atlanta heritage unit

Here's a shot from last week of the Savannah & Atlanta heritage unit (SD70ACe #1065) as she lead Piedmont Division train P11 by the bronze statue of Roy Rogers and Trigger in Buford, Ga. The saddle for the real life Trigger was made at a tannery located across the street from this statue. The statue represents Trigger being fitted with his new saddle. Train number P11 brings autorack cars loaded with Toyotas from Commerce, Ga., bound for Atlanta for export.

Norfolk Southern intermodal train #229 crosses the St Johns River in Jacksonville, Fl., led by the Central of Georgia heritage unit. The train is on Florida East Coast trackage here, and FEC will forward the freight on to points south such as Titusville and Miami.

A Thoroughbred coal train crosses the Susquehanna River on the Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh Bridge. Built in 1924 by the Reading Railroad, this bridge has 51 arches, three more than its famous PRR neighbor, Rockville Bridge.

Here is the February 2013 calendar shot by Bruce Kerr who is a locomotive engineer in Harrisburg, Pa.

It’s a good thing Bruce Kerr counts climbing among his hobbies. For this photo, Kerr had to climb a 13-foot mound of dirt, stones, and boulders to get to the right vantage point. “Between the shifting dirt, the clouds, the bugs, sumac trees in the way that I had to cut, and getting a train at just the right time, it’s difficult to get this shot to come together,” Kerr says. “But I like climbing, and it’s worth it to get a good picture.” In fact, Kerr doesn’t mind shinnying up a tree to get a better perspective, and he keeps a set of climbing pegs with his camera.

“There’s nothing that improves the look of a shot more than elevation,” Kerr notes. “Looking back, I wish I had climbed the tree to the right of the mound. I think I could have gotten more of city in the photo.”

Here's a shot from Monday, as train 125 was departing Atlanta with the Virginian unit leading. The brick building right behind the engines is the old 125 Spring Street Norfolk Southern office building, and of course, the downtown Atlanta skyline is the backdrop.

Here's the calendar shot from January 2013. This photograph was taken by Chris Dalton who is a train dispatcher in Bluefield, W.Va. This is Chris' fourth win in the calendar contest and he believes that, "the calendar competition helps generate a lot of enthusiasm and interest among our employees and our customers, and I enjoy being able to contribute to that."
