Old Faithful Inn lobby interior - a log hotel in Yellowstone NP

Old Faithful Inn is a spectacular log (lodgepole pine) resort hotel in Yellowstone National Park that was initially built in the winter of 1903-1904. It is the largest log hotel in the world and possibly even the largest log building in the world. There have been several additions made over the years to this building, but this lobby is original to 1903-1904. It remains a prime example of the "Golden Age" of rustic resort architecture (Robert Reamer was the architect).

This photo is a blending of 5 exposures (this is not true HDR tonemapping), in order to capture the tremendous exposure range that exists within the lobby interior, and to add the correct warmth (color balance) to the wood. (Here's an example of what the lobby looks like without this exposure blending - courtesy of pfrench99's photostream.)
Redwood Forest

IronRodArt - Royce Bair ("Star Shooter") posted a photo:

A grove of tall, old growth Redwood trees in Northern California. These Redwoods are in the Simpson-Reed Grove (Simpson-Reed Trail), which is within the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. (Photographed on Fujichrome film with a Mamiya 6x7cm, 50mm lens. ISO 50 - f11 - 1/2 second - See CC filtration below.)

Evil Lumber Companies? "The names of several memorial groves [like the Simpson-Reed Grove] ... reflect the generosity of lumbermen who donated them..." -- from the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park brochure.

Redwoods Photo Tip: You'll notice that the color balance of this image is much warmer than most images you'll see of the redwoods. That's because this photo was taken with two Kodak gelatin Color Compensating (CC) filters over the lens -- a 10 CC Yellow, and a 10 CC Red (a little more amber in color than a 81C filter). This is because the tall redwood forests filter out much of the warmth of the sunlight (start out at 5000 degrees Kelvin) before it reaches the forest floor, where the light now becomes closer to about 4000 degrees Kelvin (quite bluish-cyan). In order to have a more correct coloration, you need to compensate with Color Correction filters. This is made so much easier today with your digital camera's White Balance settings. Instead of using the "Auto" White Balance setting ("Average" on some cameras), switch to the "Cloudy" setting (about 6500 degrees Kelvin), or the "Open Shade" (about 7500 degrees Kelvin) setting. These settings will warm up your images and make them much more pleasing. (Of course, you can just shoot RAW, like most professionals do, and fine tuning your images in post production; however, it is always best to set your white balance correctly so that your camera JPEGs will look as good as possible for quick editing -- just in case you have a deadline and don't have time for post.)

Old, abandon Merry-Go-Round

I found this old Merry-Go-Round in the playground of an abandoned elementary school in Eureka, Utah. Eureka is a mining town in the Tintic Mining District, which was once a wealthy gold and silver mining area. The population of the town (as of 2000) has dwindled to under 800 people. The photo was shot on B/W film, and this image was scanned from a sepia-toned print.
Footnote: Even though the school is abandoned, kids from the surrounding neighborhood still come by and play on this old, rusting merry-go-round (as you can tell by the worn path around it). Makes you feel good!

This is the "business" end of a vintage manure spreader -- an old, abandon, horse drawn model (you don't want to stand back here, when it is throwing manure into the air!). I grew up on a dairy farm, and operated one of these pieces of farm machinery, accept ours was pulled by a tractor, not a horse (I'm old, but not THAT old ;-)

This is a section of the Sacred Grove with old growth hardwood trees and marsh - photographed in early May. This image belongs to the Sacred Grove / Smith Farm set. Click on image to view LARGER and on black.

The Sacred Grove is an LDS Church historical site in Western New York State near Palmyra, NY. This "Shady Woodland" was made sacred by the Prophet, Joseph Smith, and The First Vision.

Old-Growth Forest: I had a chance to meet with the forester that the church employs to care for this grove. I was impressed with the way they manage this forest and try to maintain a balance in nature (keep it as pristine and natural as possible), but allow for so much foot traffic through this popular site. In many ways this forest is probably in a more natural state than it was in 1820. For more information refer to this page and the link to a 1990 Ensign article. (Note: "Old-growth" refers to forests that have a wide diversity of age, vs. forests that are clear-cut, replanted at the same time, and then grow up together with nearly the age.)

Tongass National Forest

IronRodArt - Royce Bair ("Star Shooter") posted a photo:

Here is a series of 5 photos (see below) I recently took in an old growth section of a temperate rainforest, in the Tongass National Forest, Southeast Alaska. Which is your favorite?
Click on image to ENLARGE and view on BLACK.

Spongy Ground: The ground cover is so thick and deep that one almost feels buoyant when standing on it! However, you need to be careful using your tripod here. I had to push the tripod legs about a foot down into the ground cover in order to secure a stable platform for the camera. If I didn't, the slightest movement of my feet would vibrate up through the tripod and blur my exposure. It was almost like I had my tripod on a trampoline! (Note: The canopy is so thick that exposures can be quite long, unless you want to use extremely high ISO settings and risk getting noisy photos.)

Location: There are many areas in the Pacific Northwest that are like this, but these photos were taken about 25 miles south of Sitka, Alaska -- near an area known as the "Frosty Reef". This area is only accessible by boat.

The Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the United States, covering most of Southeast Alaska, and surrounds the famous Inside Passage. The Tongass is also part of one of the largest temperate rain forests in the world, the Pacific temperate rain forests.
