Farewell Bend on the Snake River in Eastern Oregon. A pre-dawn start on the last day of my trip. For early travelers on the Oregon Trail, this was the last stop for water as they headed west to Portland and the Pacific Ocean.

The road up to Hurricane Ridge was at its most mystical when shrouded in fog. These snags have been standing for as long as I can remember. The fog was moving swiftly that morning - I made three exposures - each with different levels of fogginess.

I met this beggar on the Narrows Trail in Zion National Park. He was pretty forthright in his insistence that this was his trail and if I wanted to pass I had to pay the price. He didn't actually tell me his name, so "rick" is unofficial. He does remind me of a certain governor.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! It was 90º F / 32º C at the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. Too hot too early for my Northwest blood. The 1500 foot escarpment on the left is in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. On the right is - Texas. The Southwest drought continues.

Another image from my first visit to Hog Springs in 1976. This wall - at that time of the morning - made me fall in love with this tiny rest area. The tree is long gone but the rock endures.

While Texas bluebonnets are known for their lush profusion, in the Chihuahuan Desert, sparsity is the rule. Taken in Big Bend. As an aside, Texas has designated all varieties of bluebonnet as the state flower. So there.
