A hanging bromeliad in the Tripa flooded forest. The inundated peat soils that give the water its characteristic black color are the result of thousands of years of accumulation of the rich plant life of the forest.

Pak Norani, of the village Desun Gembira, works with other community members as boatmakers. They say that their livelihood has been destroyed by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), when APP cleared the forests they relied on for timber to make boats, part of their customary lands, without permission or compensation. With the wood running out, Pak Norani says his family will be destined for poverty.
