A medium-sized brown butterfly with eye spots is usually a Satyr of some kind. I don't recognize this one. Most satyrs don't feed on nectar.

A Common Buckeye on butterfly bush in the backyard. The large eye spots are to startle and confuse predators. Buckeyes feed on nectar and also suck minerals from mud and wet sand. Their larval food is snapdragons and members of the plantain family.

The butterfly bushes in the back yard are blooming and are a magnet for butterflies. This is a male Clouded Sulphur. Larval plants are clover, alfalfa and other legumes.

Baby skunks at WildCareOklahoma. That black and white contrast is a warning to potential predators. Their pungent spray is produced by two glands on either side of the anus and can be sprayed in the direction of a threat. Skunks are a major vector of rabies in Oklahoma and any strange acting animal should be avoided. Coloration can vary on skunks, some have one stripe down the back, some two. The animal on the right has more white than most.

Took an early morning drive around Lake Thunderbird hoping to find some does with fawns along the edges, but no luck. Saw very few does. I suspect they are still in the timber with their young fawns.

Have you ever had a tribe of little skunks sniffing your sneakers? Apparently my sneakers are stinky enough they accepted me into the family. Taken at WildCareOklahoma near Noble.

These three Great Horned Owls are orphans being raised by WildCareOklahoma near Noble.
They are feathering in nicely and have tufts forming on their heads. A lot of people think these are ears, but they aren't. Owls' ears are on the sides of their face and are unevenly placed and pointed in different directions to better determine the location of prey rustling on the ground. Their dish-shaped faces act like parabolic microphones to direct sounds to their ears. Good adaptations for a bird that hunts in the dark. WildCare currently has not only Great Horned Owls, but also Barred Owls, Eastern Screech Owls and Barn Owls under care.

A litter of four young coyotes that was found in tornado rubble near Shawnee, OK and brought to WildCareOklahoma near Noble. I wish you could have heard the fierce growls as I placed my lens near the opening to their shelter. WildCare's intake is up approximately 20 percent from the recent severe weather. Although hundreds of millions have been donated for human victims, an online fundraiser has produced less than $1500 for nature's victims. For perspective, WildCare ordered $1000 worth of raccoon milk yesterday.

This juvenile Great Horned Owl is an orphan being raised by WildCareOklahoma for release back into the wild. He is progressing nicely, feathering out and beginning to get tufts on his head. Check out those talons! Yes, they are sharp and he will try to land on your arm to be fed.
