Seven Falls

A scene from Seven Falls in Colorado Springs. We were rained out for awhile under a shelter. Then later we got locked up there because they closed and locked the gates earlier than announced. Those asshats then didn't even offer to make any amends by, say, refunding us the $9 each they charged us to hike a one-mile trail. Asshats! Never going back to Seven Falls!

The Roger Williams Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island has a cool thing where they carve up a bunch of pumpkins. Some are regular jack-o-lanterns while others are more intricate. This is an example of an intricately carved pumpkin.

Downtown Providence

This was my home for a week (October 28 through November 4). The city was neat. I loved the old buildings and rich history. However, it was on the east coast and that means crappy, life-dismissing driving. Crosswalk buttons never worked and didn't matter anyway because cars would weave between you and the next pedestrian if possible. They don't want to hit you, says my advisor, it's just that they will.

So it was nice but I wouldn't want to live there. I was also suprised by the accent. A lot of people spoke with what I had assumed was a Bostonian accent and now know to be sort of a New England accent. I liked this very much.

Anyway, this picture was taken from some bridge somewhere. I, my advisor, and a couple of colleagues took a walk looking for photographic opportunities. Then we ate at Cuban Revolution.

Hurricane conference

This is the first session at the annual American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics meeting. Notice how it's quite unattended. I think it's because the city is just about shut down due to Hurricane Sandy and many people had canceled flights.

Obviously I made the meeting (my advisor got stuck back in Lincoln, arriving in Providence two days late and missing my poster session). However, my suitcase did not make it to Providence until five days AFTER me and United Airlines said they would reimburse me for the clothes I needed to buy to attend the conference. Unfortunately the only nearby store that was open was a Macy's, which sells lots of expensive clothes. So I spent a lot and got not too much. I'm used to shopping at Target.

I like catching candid pictures of people. For one thing, it's a little weird telling someone to do this or do that, so it's nice to just see a 'pose' and to snap away. However, when they notice you it can ruin the moment. I've gotten icy glares before. Here, the two subjects have noticed me and are thinking to themselves, "Oh, no…" On the other hand, since these people were awesome, they didn't kill me afterwards, and just smiled. In fact, their grins work here. I like it.

The annual conference for Women in Physics has evolved to become the conference for Women in Physical Sciences. Thus the extra "S". This year there were many chemistry, engineering, and biology talks.

So here is the actual cograil…thing…descending Pikes Peak. As you can see, it's very crowded on the inside. That is one of the reasons why I opted to drive. Another reason is they don't stop at the top for very long. Another reason is it costs a king's ransom (for a poor graduate student). I bet it was beautiful and stress-free though. At the Japanese Fall Festival in Lincoln, NE. This game was the bane of my existence as a child. My childhood was spent on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and we used to go off base to these carnivals full of games and food (I still haven't had yakitori as good as Okinawa's). And this game, this "Win a Goldfish" game, used to taunt me no end. The object of the game was to, obviously, catch a goldfish. However, the little net is made of paper and if you move it too quickly you'll tear the paper. Too slowly and the net gets all soggy and weak. What to do? What you do is you move the net sideways in the water under a fish and bring it up slowly, but then the fish gets freaked and swims away.

But that's not all, because if you ever do get a fish then you also have to buy a fish bowl, fish food, water treatment tablets, and pebbles.

It's a dumb game!

A warm summer's day

This was a warm day in Boulder not too long ago. Well, it's like 6 miles from downtown Boulder, at Walden Pond's boardwalks. However, the "pond" wasn't very wet due to the blasted drought!

Anyway, it's cold in Lincoln, NE these days, and cold and rainy in Boulder, CO. So I'm missing the warmth.

A-maze-ing

This is the corn maze (or maize) at the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. This was my first visit to the Chatfield gardens and I wasn't very impressed. I don't know the idea behind Chatfield; there wasn't much there except a lot of space. And the corn maze was fun for awhile, but…well…you should go and see for yourself. There were a bunch of cheaters, too, going through the corn rather than getting your money's worth. Seriously, if you're going to pay to walk a maze, why would you cheat?

Anyway, I'm not too keen on coming back to the Chatfield gardens. I'll stick to the York Street gardens.

Too bad that experience costs ~$300 per person. That's almost as expensive as going up Pikes Peak on the Cog Railway!

Mountain exit

There's no message here. I sometimes put signs in my pictures that relay a message given some kind of context. For example, I once put my ladyfriend in front of a "ONE WAY" sign and made her point at herself with both thumbs. In the case of this photo, I just thought the red sign contrasted pretty well with the clouds and the greenish/brownish things, not that "One shouldn't venture into the mountains."

This is a smoke-damaged pig lung on display at the annual Streets Alive in Lincoln, NE. Don't smoke kids, your lung will look like this! I was going to touch it thinking it was just a model, but it was real, so I'm glad I asked first. But then I got all confused and said to the person at the booth: "Wait a minute. How did you get a smoke-damaged pig lung?" And she told me, with sincerity, "We got the pig to smoke." I blinked at her for a moment and then said, "Oh."

Finally she said, "No, it's simulated." I was relieved a bit, and wondered, "I hope she didn't think I was stupid for believing pigs could smoke…"

On some level I thought this was very cool. On another level I was very annoyed because the strings crossed the sidewalk and it was impossible to get through without ducking, stepping over, and pulling up or pushing down the threads. Apparently someone played a practical joke on the Delta Delta Delta sorority or they themselves thought this would be funny. But people use the sidewalks! I saw a woman on a bicycle almost get clotheslined because she didn't see one strand was crossing her path.

This is up at the Brainard Lake Recreation Area somewhere…high. Here we are on the way to Lake Isabelle on a beautiful *muffled muffled* day. I saw a moose earlier, I remember that!

P.S. If you think this picture is crooked, it's totally my fault. For some reason every orientation I tried makes it look crooked. And I haven't been drinking. I just can't make this look right to me.
