Impression of a wreck that stranded in the early eighties at the northern cost of the Akamas Peninsular of Cyprus. These are scans of pictures that I took in the summer of 1988. In the meantime the wreck disappeared completely.

Pentax P30 on Kodak Gold 200.

The Cypriot authorities put up signs around the Edro III to keep looters and souvenir hunters off the vessel. Additionally she is permanently guarded by a private security company on behalf of her current owners.

Exposed to the Sea

One year passed since the Edro III (IMO No.: 6613316) stranded at the sea caves at the coast of Pegeia in Cyprus. The exposure to the sea and the weather left its traces. Below a picture taken a year ago.

I will go back next year, If the vessel will not be removed in the meantime.

I took this picture of the Edro III on the first anniversary of her stranding at the sea caves at Pegeia in Cyprus' Pafos district.

The picture has been taken with a 60mm f/8 Holga lens mounted on my Pentax K-5. Holga produces some cheap plastic lenses that recreate the "Holga Effect" on modern DSLR cameras.

The last trip of the EDRO III: She left Limassol on 07.Dec. 2011 at 1600hrs, bound for Rhodes. During the night the weather worsened up to 8Bft. Her AIS reported the last position on 08.Dec.2011 at 0213hrs. She was heading due north with a speed of 2.5 kn. That would indicate that she had lost her engines and was drifting with the wind and the current towards the coast. She stranded finally on the 08.Dec.2011 at around 0700hrs at the coast of Peyia
(Pegeia).

Although all hazardous materials have been removed from the vessel earlier this year, the vessel is still there. The signs would indicate that she is "here to stay". The vessel is also guarded by a private security company. Although the vessel seems to be given up, she still has an owner and some value for them.

For the Shipspotters: The EDRO III (IMO No: 6613316) has been built in 1966 as Baltique by Kaldnes Mek. in Norway for Fred Olsen & Co. She belongs today to Albanian interests. The vessel stranded at the coast of Cyprus during a storm on 08.Dec.2011. As of today her fate is uncertain.

The vessel stranded in a storm on 08/12/2011 at the Sea Caves in Pegaia/Cyprus.

When this picture was taken, the diesel, hydrocarbons and marine pollutants onboard the vessel are being removed and the hull is being made watertight again in preparation for the vessel's last voyage.

Edro III - A temporary Landmark

View from Pegeia/Cyprus to the Edro III that stranded at the sea caves on the 08/12/2011 during a storm.

In the meantime preparations to remove the vessel from the beach are progressing. The salvage company has announced on its website that all diesel, hydrocarbons and marine pollutants have been removed from the vessel and that the leaks in the hull have been closed. The water that entered into the ship during the stranding is now being pumped out. Once this has been completed an attempt will be made to pull her off the rocks and tow her to a nearby shipyard to make temporary repairs for her last voyage that will most probably lead her to the scrapyard. Since permanent repairs might exceed the current value of the vessel, it is expected that she will be declared a total constructive loss and sold for demolition.

A ship stranded on the coast of Cyprus - I am posting a lot of pictures of this vessel lately. However one has to take the opportunity as long as she is there.

The Tselefos Bridge (also Kelefos Bridge or various other spellings) in Cyprus' Pafos district. The bridge, spanning the Diarizos River, has a length of 10.70 m. It has been built in 15th or 16th century by the Venetians as part of a camel caravan route from the copper mines in the Trodos mountains to the seashore. The Venetians ruled the island from 1473 until 1570.

Copper has been mined in the Trodos mountains of Cyprus since ancient times. It is believed that the name "Cyprus" is a derivation from the word "Copper". The copper-bearing ore has been transported by camel caravans to the processing plants and then further on to the seaports for export. These caravans consisted out of several dozen animals that could carry up to 500kg copper ore each. The last camels disappeared in the mid sixties of the 20th century only.
