Miss Mary Boyer operated a private school within the buildings of the Grandview system prior to the establishment of the Upper Arlington schools. She was considered one the finest grade school teachers in the state and was the first schoolteacher in Upper Arlington. Miss Boyer taught the village's first, second, and third grades during the 1917-1918 school year, establishing the foundation upon which the Upper Arlington school system was built. She was also the teachers' committee chairman and one of the first four teachers in the resulting school system, which opened in October 1918 with an initial enrollment of fifty-two students. Miss Boyer instructed fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in the newly created school system.
