Road to the Skies

Nikon D800E with Lens Mamiya 645 APO 200mm f/2.8 with Mamiya 2X Extender and Fotodiox Pro Nikon F adapter. The whole set is mounted on Gitzo Tripod. Taken at ISO 1000, 1/200s, f/5.6. focusing was done using live view and Hoodman loupe, trigerring with RF phottix trigger to minimize camera shake.

This road is a very long climb and with proper telephoto compression technique (I used 400mm Focal Length here), it is possible to capture it like climbing a wall erected in front of you.

This lens is extremely sharp and can be used also for landscape photography in addition to the obvious portrait application shown in the previous photo of my photostream.. If you examine in details the buildings in this photograph, they are extremely well defined, sharp, colorful with no softening in the corners as happening with 135 format lenses...

My Mamiya 645 lens collection for DSLR

episa posted a photo:

Photo taken with my Nikon D800E with lens Micro Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 AIS.

These are the lenses I use on my Nikon D800E using a Mamiya 645 to Nikon F adapter. The lenses shown here are from left to right the following: 200mm APO f/2.8, 150mm f/2.8 A, 120mm Macro f/4, 80mm f/2.8N, 55mm f/2.8N.

The most spectacular results are obtained with the APO 200/2.8 and the A150/2.8 for the bokeh, sharpness wide open without CA and smooth color tones. The other lenses have the sharpness (at f/4 and above), no CA (above f/4) and smooth color tones as well but lose the uniqueness of the bokeh Wide Open of the first two lenses.

Note the Rubber hood on the Mamiya 200mm APO is not the original one which should be the second part in white/beige color as well. Since the native hood is front heavy and I never got it with the used lens I purchased, I therefore purchased a nice, lighter and high quality substitute: it is a Mamiya RB67/M645 rubber lens hood for 127-250mm lens.

From Wikipedia: "Also known as Kiev Monastery of the Caves, it is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery in Kiev, Ukraine. Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1015, the Lavra complex has been a preeminent center of the Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe.
Together with the Saint-Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site."
I took the picture of this church complex from the middle of the 1 km long Patona bridge on the Dniepr river. It is one of the rare views from land where one can see the overall complex as it is hidden inside the trees.
With this setup the depth of field is very shallow and it is possible to use a selective focus technique to emphasize the place where the ladybug sits (3D feeling). Also the backlighting on the leaf reveals very well its texture and strong green color, with the assistance of the very sharp Leica lens.
The ladybug is also sitting approx. at the bottom third / left third of the picture, which helps for the composition.

This young couple newly wed was walking along the river Dniepr bank (Kiev Ukraine) with their wedding photographer.
While the Pro photographer was composing his picture from the front, I hid myself behind the couple to remove the photographer from the background and captured this hitch hiking scene from behind.
This also presented a favorable situation where I did not have to ask for any permission/release right since no faces were visible!. The final image came out as a nice surprise.

I tried to use the panning technique handholding the manual focus lens Leica Elmarit 180mm APO f/2.8 mounted on Nikon D700. Parameters: 1/15s f2.8 at ISO 125.

The person is still not sharp so I need to continue to improve my technique. I like the abstract background resulting from this move of the lens.

This preeminent Air Force officer in the May 9 parade left the day with flowers in his hands.

I like the contrast between the martial posture of this highly decorated veteran and the delicate flowers in his hands.

Taken with Nikon D700 and Leica Elmarit 180mm APO. Selective focus on his face with lens wide opend at f2.8 makes the foreground and background blurry, even at 10 meters away from the place I took this photo.

I never saw the two people who ate at this table of a restaurant located along the Dniepr river in Kiev. I find this scene very inviting: a peaceful and relaxing moment difficult to find in the busy day of our modern city life.....
Also the punchy contrast between these two complementary colors (orange and blue) seems to work here....
