Il est de taille moyenne, trapu, et partage une apparence quasi-similaire avec son très proche cousin, le Chevalier de Sibérie, Tringa brevipes.

Les chevaliers errants sont une espèce unique parmi le genre Tringa. En effet, leur plumage gris au niveau des ailes et du dos est parfaitement uni, le ventre est blanc. Ils affichent aussi un large motif tacheté au niveau de la poitrine s'étalant plus ou moins bas sur le ventre lorsqu'ils revêtent leur plumage nuptial. Ils sont par ailleurs munis, durant leur période de reproduction, d'un sourcil assez proéminent.

Ils ont aussi de petites pattes jaunes et un bec gris foncé. Les adultes, lorsqu'ils arborent leur plumage nuptial, sont fortement rayés en dessous.

C'est une espèce commune répandue dans les savanes boisées, les terres agricoles et les zones d'habitation sur une bonne partie de son aire naturelle. Elle a aussi été introduite aux États-Unis dans la région de Los Angeles, en Californie et dans d'autres pays comme le nord de l'Indonésie, l'Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande. En Australie, elle a été introduite à Melbourne dans les années 1860 et s'est depuis multipliée, remplaçant souvent des tourterelles indigènes. En Australie, on la trouve maintenant dans les rues, les parcs, les jardins, les zones agricoles et les zones de broussailles tropicales, de Hobart, en Tasmanie à Cooktown, au Queensland et à Port Lincoln, en Australie-Méridionale. On la voit aussi à Perth, Pemberton, Kalgoorlie et Esperance, en Australie-Occidentale. Son aire de répartition est en expansion.

The Hawaiian Goose evolved from the Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), which most likely migrated to the Hawaiian islands 500,000 years ago, shortly after the island of Hawaiʻi was formed. This ancestor is the progenitor of the Hawaiian Goose as well as the prehistoric Giant Hawaiʻi Goose and Nēnē-nui (Branta hylobadistes). The Nēnē-nui was larger than the Hawaiian Goose, varied from flightless to flighted depending on the individual, and inhabited the island of Maui. Similar fossil geese found on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi may be of the same species. The Giant Hawaiʻi Goose was restricted to the island of Hawaiʻi and measured 1.2 metres in length with a mass of 8.6 kilograms , making it more than four times larger than the Hawaiian Goose. It is believed that the herbivorous Giant Hawaiʻi Goose occupied the same ecological niche as the goose-like ducks known as moa-nalo, which were not present on the Big Island.Based on mitochondrial DNA found in fossils, all Hawaiian geese, living and dead, are closely related to the Giant Canada Goose (B. c. maxima) and Dusky Canada Goose (B. c. occidentalis).

Partout où se rendent les rhinocéros, ils sont escortés d'un nuage blanc de hérons garde-bœufs affamés. C'est en suivant les troupeaux que ces petits hérons se sont égaillés hors de leurs marais originels. Ils ont ainsi délaissé poissons et grenouilles pour les insectes que soulèvent les grands herbivores dans les steppes et savanes.

Originaire de l'Afrique, très courant au Kenya ou en Tanzanie, le héron garde-bœufs se rencontre actuellement sur tous les continents excepté à proximité des cercles polaires. C'est un échassier vivant près des eaux douces, piscivore de taille moyenne, son régime est principalement insectivore : on le retrouve souvent en compagnie du bétail ou des chevaux sur lesquels il se perche pour les débarrasser de leurs parasites. Cependant, les insectes ne représentent pas son menu exclusif, il comporte également des petits vertébrés. Contrairement aux autres hérons, le garde-bœufs n'est pas forcément lié au milieu aquatique. Cet oiseau fait preuve d'un instinct grégaire.

Dans les colonies, qui peuvent rassembler des milliers de gardes-bœufs, chaque nid est protégé par l'un des parents, tandis que l'autre cherche de la nourriture. Ces absences alternées sont aussi l'occasion d'escapades et de visites clandestines ; mais les parents infidèles élèvent volontiers des petits illégitimes.

L'aigle ravisseur est le principal ennemi des échassiers. Les ibis côtoient les gardes-bœufs. Après avoir fondu sur la foule, l'aigle plane pour choisir la proie la moins prompte à s'envoler. Dès qu'ils le peuvent, les garde-bœufs se perchent afin de repérer l'assaillant de plus loin.
