Camping near the Irish Canyons, just off the road and yet still in the middle of nowhere. Snowed the first night and you can still see some on the mountains around us, but the canyons were still dry and nobody lost an arm so it was a good trip.

(We camped at Sandthrax campground, and, on the satellite map, to the upper left, you can easily identify some of the canyons we did.)

Here Bear Peak is the central portion of the Flatirons area west of Boulder Colorado and gorgeous enough that even a quick snapshot is worth sharing!

Taken during the morning commute. The geotag is the shot location, not the image location. Here, the trees block out the charming city at the base of the foothills and make it appear even wilder than it is!

I cut this for dinner and found it so attractive I had to take a picture of it.

Flash fired above up and reflected off a two foot reflector. Had I taken the time to actually pull out a tripod, I wouldn't have blocked so much with my head...but then I was hungry.

Surely this should be black and white, but I like color and the wintery, solitude that the natural filtered light brings to this.
I'm attracted to this kind of shot even if there is nothing special about it. I corrected this slightly for perspective (because I really want a tilt-shift lens and can't really justify one).

Architecture is part of the art at the Art Institute of Chicago. I took a few black and whites (uncharacteristic of me) and felt that this highlighted the texture and form in the museum.

One of the most beautiful things to see in Turkey is actually available for everyone to take home. Replicas of these hand painted Iznik tiles found at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul are widely available at markets throughout the country.

The tiles feature vivid blue carnations and rich red tulips (in a shape that, once you recognize it is a tulip, you wonder how you didn't think that before) on white backgrounds. Often, the motifs are raised relief from the background.

I thought it best not to try to chisel these from the walls and get a few more authentic souvenirs.

The Dome was once a bank but today it's a ritzy bar and restaurant. Above all, it's done up big for the holidays. The tree center piece above the bar slowly changes colors. On this night it was so crowded doormen were holding folks outside in the cold.

Judging from the languages on signs in cafés, Cirali is a low-key resort popular among Russians and Germans.

Most pleasant about it is just how little there is to do and how little there is going on. Maybe it was the late season, but here's the chance to swim in crystal blue Mediterranean waters with just about nobody around. Isn't that what relaxing is often about?

Turkish coffee isn't nearly as popular as tea served in tiny, tulip shaped glasses, but it does seem a bit fancier, here, with little dome lids and copper cups.

Often, it's restraint which brings out creativity. The "new mosque" (1597, they have a different idea of "new" in Istanbul!) is a beautiful example. The ornately decorated mosque stays strictly within the limits of Islamic Art by eschewing images of people or animals.
The limitation focuses the design to intricate pattens, repeating shapes, floral motifs, and Koranic calligraphy.

Turkish delight, called Lokum in Turkey, is available in such greater variety in Turkey than elsewhere. And, perhaps not surprisingly, given its popularity, it's quite a bit tastier too!

Koska is a traditional chain of confectioners. Lokum was just mentioned over on CNN; I think my photo is more interesting, but you know, I'm biased...

Almost overwhelmed by the gypsum rich waters, this ruin is in the process of being encased. Or maybe the white mountain surrounding it will just be washed away in the rains? I don't know but I thought it made for a dramatic shot.

Travertines, Pamukkale, Turkey

The travertines, once the premier tourist photo of Turkey, are an evaporated shadow of what they once were.

Many of the pools are now dry and this amazing site is not nearly as photogenic as it once must have been. (I had to zoom in to capture a few with lovely blue water).

Of course, that hasn't stopped nearly every hotel in the village from siphoning off water for their pools which (at least off season) appear nearly unused. And it also shouldn't stop you from stopping by on any trip to Turkey. Still an amazing site, fun to visit, and the impressive ruins of Hierapolis are worth the hike up from the village below.

Hagia Sofia Ceiling

A single, wide angle, shot of the ceiling of the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. The byzantine cathedral, turned mosque, turned museum is an impressive architectural site and a must see on any visit to Istanbul.

This shot has been adjusted for exposure and levels, but really nothing more. This is what happens when you lay your camera on the ground in a beautiful place!

There's this odd, blur going on around the edges of this shot, but viewed large, it's gone. I don't know exactly what's happening, but if that bothers you, just have a look at it larger and this should be better.
