Building Up Air

A Metrolink Angels baseball train sits on the newly completed Track 4 at the Fullerton Train Station.

The engineer is building up air pressure prior to preforming a standing air test during a pre-departure check.

The train will leave shortly thereafter in route to Anaheim.

What is Redundant Alex?

The red sign above is called a "Red Board" and is the railroad equivalent to a stop sign.

When you come upon a red board while driving a train, unlike a regular stop sign, you are generally not supposed to pass the board unless you have permission from whomever put it there.

Moreover, when a red board is placed in the center of the grade (between the rails) such as it is here, it means stop here and don't go any further down the track.

You will see these on damaged track after an accident, or on corners where the track ends out of sight. They are also placed in areas where the track is abandon and there is no other evidence from the engineer's point of view that the track is out of service.

This however is a unique use of a red broad because realistically, a train can only proceed down this track another 18" or so past the board before it will abruptly come to a stop on the big yellow bump stop.

Ergo, the board is redundant and repetitive.

An Amtrak Train

The light trails of an entire Amtrak train are visible in this long exposure.

The shutter was opened as the train approached the left side of the frame and it was shut once the rear of the train cleared the right side of the frame.

Windows are always interesting to photograph because there is generally more than one view that comprises the image. Here, I am looking through the side window of SCAX 646 at the buildings on Walnut Street, while the reflection of myself and the facade of the structures on Santa Fe Street (behind me) blend into the overall view.

For the last year we have been watching these new cars wrapped in plastic, come up from the harbor on flatcars to be assembled in Metrolink's San Bernardino facility. Here #646 sits at Fullerton awaiting the end of the Angles Baseball game where after it will take people home from the stadium in Anaheim.

Wheres Wally?

Wally is one of the Fullerton regulars who can be found down at the train station on most any evening.

Wally is quite the conversationalist and was following me around while I was photographing the train behind him, and telling me about his experiences in the army back in the early 1960's.

When I was finished getting what I wanted of the train, I suggested that Wally stand in the remaining bit of light by the door and I would take his portrait.

What struck me about this was the stoic look on Wally's face - I thought he would have smiled.

Railfans are like a box of chocolates.....

James Stewart & Brenda

James Stewart was unaware that Amtrak required all weapons to be unloaded and in a locked case before they can be checked for train travel by station personnel.

Since Amtrak began allowing firearms on their trains after President Obama signed an executive order In November of 2010, James Stewart figured he would bring Brenda on his next out of state trip on the moto cross race circuit.

However when he arrived at the station, James was shocked to learn that in order for Amtrak to accept Brenda for transport, she would need to be unloaded and in a locked container.

James was truly torn because while he really wanted to save a few bucks on his upcoming trip by taking the train, but he and Brenda had never spent a night apart since he purchased her on the eve of California's ban on assault weapons back in 1989.

In the above photo, we see James standing on the rear portico of the Fullerton Station contemplating the abandonment issues associated with being way from his beloved Brenda during the duration of his upcoming ride on Amtrak.

In the background is the new "secure" luggage cart that was positioned at Fullerton in November of 2010, presumably to handle the envisioned deluge of weapons that would need to be checked by the traveling public.

As of March 3, 2011, the cart has not moved since it was delivered.
