My first post of 2012... a very typical long exposure composition. Not entirely typical for me as it's my first post shot with film in a very long time. Came across this exposure while finally processing the film that I shot back in October along with a roll I shot with my new Zero2000 pinhole camera that Santa left under the tree for me!

I am looking forward to mixing it up a bit this year with some pinhole photography and continuing the fun I have been having with the iPhone, which I have dedicated an alternate stream to here.

I have been very busy with a number of photography related projects and haven't had much free time to dedicate to making new images. Printing my latest exhibit with Jon DeBoer and Brian Day, collaborating with a photographer in the Bahamas on a fine-art project and rebuilding my photography and printing websites has kept me plenty busy.

In conjuction with Joel Tjintjelaar's relaunch of www.bwvision.com, I am now offering my specialized B&W printing as a service to other photographers. I have partnered with bwvision.com to provide the highest standard in black and white photographic reproductions that will be made available through his website.

All my prints are made using Piezography, a high-end digital printing system utilizing carbon-based monochromatic inks and specialized software. I have an Epson 9600 using Special Edition K7 inks for matte prints and an Epson 9880 dedicated to glossy printing using MPS selenium toned inks. I also have a desktop system with Neutral inks for prints up to 13" wide.

I will also be offering print workshops for anyone interested in learning how to set up and print using Piezography.

I was finally able to get out for a day of shooting and chose to head over to Canada to explore the northern shores of Lake Erie. The day started out rather frustrating as not a whole lot caught my interest. Long exposure seascapes have become so popular it has become pretty difficult to come up with something different than the usual pier shot with silky smooth water and a cloud streaked sky. After walking away from many possible shots throughout the day I came across this scene. The subtle curve of the shoreline, pebbled beach and shaded pile of gravel made for a fairly strong composition with some nice contrasts.

A somewhat odd composition, but I think it works.

I seem to keep going back and forth between dark, ominous images and higher key minimalistic shots. My attraction lies in the subtleties that can be achieved in the high, mid and dark tonal areas. I usually find myself exploring the mid to darker tones but there is just something that I love in the upper zones, especially when translated to print.

I was pretty excited about this one when shooting although don't think it turned out as well as I had expected. I think it may be better without the water/horizon, instead having the cement meet directly with the sky? Not sure if that angle is even possible, this is the lowest my tripod would go. Even at ground level I don't know if it would have been possible to hide the horizon line.

Back in business after my MacBook Pro died a week or so ago. Grabbed a new 2.8GHZ i7 MacBook Pro with 8G RAM and a solid-state drive. The SSD is amazingly fast and has made my Lightroom experience much more enjoyable.

A special thanks goes out to Mark Hungsberg for the location information on his side of the lake. You can see some of his shots of this subject on his stream .

On another note, I hit 1000 contacts last week and just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who has been following my photostream. I greatly appreciate the support, it has been a great source of motivation for me.

I feel like I have lost my photo mojo lately, the real world has been keeping me busy and have not been able to get out for some serious shooting. I was finally able to sneak out for a bit on my way home from work last week for a few shots along The River Rouge.

Freighters travel this portion of The Rouge to access Henry Ford's Rouge Complex, where upon completion in 1928 was the largest industrial complex in the world. The massive facility had the ability to turn raw materials such as iron ore into complete vehicles ready for the showroom. Many buildings within the complex were designed by Albert Kahn and have been subjects for Diego Rivera, Charles Sheeler and Michael Kenna, who's work here has been some of the biggest inspirations in my own work.

Summer has kept me pretty busy lately, sorry I haven't been keeping up too well with everyone's streams. Haven't been out shooting much lately so here's another shot from my trip to Lake Superior back in June.

I have been doing a lot of printing and feel I have finally found a paper & ink combination that is working well for me and I am really loving the results. If you haven't already, check out my article on monochromatic printing with Piezography on Joel Tjintjelaar's website www.bwvision.com.

I shot this back in March and had been struggling with processing these shots so never did anything with them. My post-processing approach has evolved a bit over the last few months and think I finally got something that I like.

I used this shot to experiment with some texture layering and have decided to keep a small amount here for the final version. I do like the effect and think it works well with this subject matter although not sure how it will ultimately look printed.

Edgewater Park has been my favorite location shoot this year and plan to return this winter to try and get these jetties with a fresh coat of snow on them.
