Trilox 'Invalid Carriage' in the Colliery Village at Beamish

Firstly, it's important to mention that the term 'Invalid Carriage' was usually used in the past to refer to this type of wheelchair. Whilst it may not necessarily be appropriate to use the term in modern times, we felt it important to refer to it as such in these photos for historical accuracy.

Manufactured by Trilox of Trowbridge, the Deluxe No 1 dates from circa World War 2. was retrieved from our stores in 2011 in a sorry looking state but after some careful and excellent restoration work by the Friends of Beamish, it was returned to use on site - seen here out for testing on 23/7/2012. There's a few minor adjustments required but it was great to see in use and hints at the incredible diversity of our collections.

The Trilox consists of a simple frame with seat and hand attachments to enable hand propulsion via two chain connected cranks. There's a hand brake and steering is achieved by moving the backrest with the upper body - hard work around tight corners!
