Shelby County
Missouri

(lightbox reccomended)

After driving my car too far down a long slopping muddy road I realised that I need to stop. The road ahead seemed passable, but I didn't chance it. Of course I could see atop the next hill a quarter of a mile away was an abandoned house. I could have drove around to other side with my map, but I assumed they could be muddy as well. So I walked. and the stable looking road illusion faded away with every step muddy step I took. I trodded my way up the hill close to the house and I knew that it was worth it. Upon reaching the yard I couldn't help but notice the nice gravel road which dead ended at the house's driveway coming from the opposite direction. I took like 5 photos and my battery died...yep. I plodded my way back to the car and managed to reverse my way through the mud and drove around the nice graveled route with a fresh battery and got this image. Hard to see all of the fancy details in the carpentry here, but avove each window had like a bat wing style ornamentation. I will return here again knowing the easy way to get here. It should be open for all kinds of clouds and weather with it not being choked with overgrowth. It looks like someone still even mows the yard.

I also began a new set titled now and then of comparison shots of the how some building used to look compared to now. Add more later.

I also added 3 new ones to my Passed On set. One being one of favorites, "Toils and Snares" house and I have heard that the bulk of the Tescumbia Church has collapsed in centerl Missouri.

Shelby County
Missouri

This region near Plevna and Bethel has a curious amount of similiar architecture with multiple dormer peaks. Abandoned or fixed up and lived in. This one here is the only abandoned one I know of with 3 dormers with peaks. I assume immigrants settled here with style that they used. I guesstimate that there are at least 25 of these with similiar style around this region. This one my wife and I received permission a year ago to use a chainsaw and remove several small trees in front, but could stand a few more removed. Anything for a shot, right? The end gables on this have large "sunrise " patterns built in them, also the dormers.
Well, the other day just a mile and half from a known house I explored a new road and thus finding an excellent abandoned house with two dormers that I never knew about! No chainsaw needed. Wide open with fancy carpentry. Stay tuned for tommorrow for a "new" abandoned house and a shot I'm proud of and I will return to.

Hader House

Hader
Goodhue County
Minnesota

I'm back from Minnesota with new material to process. This house was probably the spookiest one that I know of in the state (so far). It has a second empire style to its architecture. Also notice that it has a peculiar resemblence to the face of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. ...or is it just me?
Plenty more to post, including central and northern Iowa. Also we enjoyed the 6 hour, white-knuckle drive back through the ice storm. Got to see several overturned semi trucks and even a Greyhound bus that took a sled ride down an embankment into a field. It stayed upright, but the passengers were probably screaming all of the way!

I also would like to add a reminder of the importance of proper geotagging. If one chooses not to add their location on the map, thats thier desicion, but when its wrong it can affect people out there in the real world. I myself also will be more careful when adding locations to a map. I think thats the purpose for geotagging to share locations, so try and place it carefully. Twice on this trip I wasted an hour each to find a place that is not there. Knocking on local people's doors and hearing that they haver never heard of such a place is frustrating and is a waste of time. Remember that people actually trust the information that is given on their maps. Anywhoo...

This one of a kind house was shared with me by Will, (Aces and Eights) while in Illinois. I rarely use sun flare, but Will had given me the idea while we were there so I let the sun sneek in on a couple of frames. Turns out to be the one frame left that escaped the editing floor. I was worried that it might compete for attention with the house, but it seems to balance.

The title was a line from an Indian in the movie "Dead Man" starring Johnny Depp. Anyone interested in black and white photography and likes strange and moody movies, I highly reccomend it.

My second day of my short trip was hosted by Illinois' famous Aces and Eights Photography (Bill). This was a first time Flickrite meet up for us and had a great time meeting the people behind the photos. Bill shared some of his incredible interior stomping grounds with me. I'll post its equally incredible exterior later.

This was a first time Flickrite meet up for us and had a great time meeting the people behind the photos. Bill shared some of his incredible interior stomping grounds with me. I'll post its equally incredible exterior later.

This is the ghost town of Sims, in Morton County, North Dakota. All thats left is a couple of abandoned houses. This house was built in 1890 and is known as the Gray/Anderson house. They must have wanted to strengthen the house by building a brick exterior or just improve its looks. Or maybe to ward off the relentless winter wind. Notice the chunk of bricks on the left upstairs window ready to fall at any moment on an unexpecting visiters!

OpenSpaces PrairePlaces has more photos of this site and even a photo of what it looked like its its glory days.

This is also much better on black. I was pleased with this one.

I have been looking forward to photographing this particular house that James (fotoroadtripr) and I have dubbed the "Monster House" for awhile now. Its over a hour and a half away. Upon arriving I was pleased to see that it was still standing, however the farmer had placed probably fifty hale bales in front of it leaving 30 feet to barely squeeze in the the wide angle. At least he had pushed the overgrowth away in front of it though. This shot took multiple tries with light painting. The red glow in the northern sky I'm not sure if it was caused by pole lights or a small town 16 miles away, but it matched the tungsten lighting inside well. I wouldn't think it would be an aurora. This photo took 7 edits to get it to lighten up for Flickr, even after recalibrating the moniter. It still looks much better in Lightroom. Tomorrow I will post another unusual house captured in a different light!

This old brick house was left alone on the Missouri River flood plains. Chamois, Missouri in Osage County, is a great cluster of abandonment. Several abandoned houses dot the river bottoms due to flooding. For some reason the farmers just leave these islands of houses out in the middle of their fields and just farm around them. I think they should be left like that even just for curiousities sake for people to pass by and wonder. Also a reminder that it WILL flood again. I have several more to process and post of this area. This brick house has large cracks and will eventually split apart. These houses all have dried mud inside.

Timing was perfect on the first morning of our trip. The clouds were breaking at sunrise and that was the last of the clouds that day. I seen that the light and sky was spectacular and all that I needed was an old building or something for a subject. Then we rounded a corner and seen this house for the first time! Why can't they be around every corner?
This is within a mile of a deserted town called Star Store, Missouri in Macon County. Didn't see a store, but there were a few abandoned houses.

Illinois Asylum for the Incurable Insane

Bartonville
Peoria
Illinois

This was the actual name of the asylum at its beginning in 1902. It operated through 1972. It had a total of 33 buildings. In 1927 it housed 2,650 people. The front facade had three tiers of porches and a large pond. This place had about everything happen to it that you could expect from an insane asylum. Labotomies, electro-shock therapy, hydro-therapy, murders, suicides, abuse, disease, and historic hauntings. Numerous deaths from Cholera, T.B. and especially a Pallegra out break in 1909 which resulted in 150 deaths within 3 years. In 1928 Syphillis was treated by injecting Malaria which caused untold number of deaths. It was that the institution had over 16,000 deaths. 1902 through 1938 in trying times the administrator named Dr. Zeller made admirable advances for humane treatment until his death in 1938. There was even a zoo.

We took a tour of this institution at night while listening to all of its history. Tours are available on Fri. and Sat. nights with hope of raising money towards its restoration. You can even ghost hunt overnight. Also we learned that Jan. 30 the asylum will be featured on the Sci-Fi channel's Ghost Hunters!!!
Update; During the show they caught a high quality apparition walking across the cemetery.

This house is the 1964 House that Will, (Aces and Eights) was gracious enough to introduce me to near Kent, Illinois.
My wife and I will set out on another adventure in Illinois this weekend with Molly Gillian from Chicago. We have plans to see a few houses, a school, and we will actually be taking a night tour of a honest-to-goodness INSANE ASYLUM! The actual name of the place in 1903 was, Illinois Asylum for the Incurable Insane. Haunted to boot and as an added bonus, the creepy cemetery where the patients are buried. Stay Tuned!

This old Victorian house in Limestone County, Texas was at the top of my Texas to-do list. After a couple of hours driving from Dallas in the fog (forecast was sun) the fog broke up and the clouds separated and then by the time we arrived all clouds were gone. Just blank blue sky...and hot. I took my time photographing it and was ready to leave and then I seen one cloud coming. And a little while longer and its friends followed! I waited even longer. This image was almost my last frame. The road was very busy and even a camper pulled over to take a few pictures of this unusual abandonment.

I would like to thank tcrow43 for information and the geotag! Check out his version and his other work!

I will have like two other versions of this house later. One with a vulture on the roof with its wings spread!

Tis down in yonder garden green
...where long we used to walk.

The finest flower ever I'd saw
is withered to a stalk.

The stalk is withered and dry, my love
...so must our hearts decay.

So make yourself contented love
...until God calls you away.

The lyrics are from an old English folk ballad dating maybe back to the 1400's. So old that its origin is unsure.
I thought that it could fit with this created scene. The chair was already there, but I supplied the portrait of an unknown woman which I got from an auction for maybe twelve dollars.
No texture was applied. One unexpected detail was my self portrait in the reflection from the bubble glass. View large. View original, if you have the time.

Also I have added another three images of the same house to mine Passed On set. I went and asked the owner for permission to go there. "Gone" he replied.
