Got the shrine all painted this evening, just in time for the tulips and miniature irises! I don't ever remember spring being this early before, except maybe for the year that Rebecca was born.

The only flowers on the place that I care to look at now, they were protected from the hail & wind last week. As you can see, in the background next to the garage---my 'killer petunias' didn't fare as well. Oh well, you can count on those things being back next year!

Carefree Flowerbed

After transplanting the volunteer rose moss from the garden to this flowerbed, it's pretty much been a carefree flowerbed. The vinca vine comes back every year now and spreads ever since I planted it in that old tree stump one year, which helps keep the weeds down. Now I prefer the looks of the German Ivy in the stump, if only I can keep it alive each winter indoors! In a couple of weeks, there will be a surprise popping up on each side of the shrine---Surprise Lilies or Naked Ladies, whichever you prefer to call them!

It's almost time to say 'good-bye' to the flowers for another year. They've already spent some time inside, but got moved back outdoors for a few more days of warmth & sunshine. It will be back inside again tomorrow night. I think they look pretty good considering what they went through a couple months ago! (although some had to move into new pots!)

We built it and they came! See that bird on top of that birdhouse you gave me for Christmas---it still has a nest in there that it built back in June. Thanks again for the nice Christmas gift!

Rock of Refuge

My latest garden rock, thanks to Rebecca! This was Part 2 of my birthday present---she had the stencil made when she got to my house on the fourth, and it only took her about 45 minutes to get the words painted on. The party-goers were very impressed, Rebecca, and so am I!

Thanks to everyone who made this possible---you know who you are! All I had to do was tell 'The Dad' a month before my birthday that this is what I wanted for my birthday, and it happened! After all these years, I've learned that if you want to get what you really want for your birthday, all you have to do is TELL them ahead of time, because after all, "If Momma is happy, then everybody's happy!" (Another version of the old saying, 'If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy') And this Momma is HAPPY!

Not sure how old this one is. I would guess at least 4 or 5 years. I remember buying it at Orscheln's the first year after I bought this iron hook. I've had it at the post office the past two winters, and before that in my basement over the winter. It gets to looking pretty pathetic by spring, but as soon as I hang it out here, give it some Miracle Gro, sunshine & water, it always rewards me with some beautiful flowers!

Labor Day Weekend 2010

And Paul & Michael finally got my mother's day/birthday gift put up this weekend! The birdhouse which is a (built-to-scale) replica of my gardenshed is now mounted on an old porch pole found in the Schieber barn two years ago when we burnt down the old barn. I'm guessing that it was from the house that used to set in front of the barn. I remember seeing it every day when I was a kid, when the school bus would drive by that old, abandoned house with a front porch. I often wondered about the people who used to live there, and what the house would've looked like in its glory days. Eventually, I could see inside the house, as it became more run-down, and the front door was no longer on the house---then I could see the staircase, and imagined the kids that would go up & down those steps everyday, and what fun it would've been to live there! I had a very active imagination as a kid, and now I have the pole from the front porch of that house in my flowerbed!

The wave petunias and giant coleus that I bought at the FFA Greenhouse have really gone wild this summer with all the moisture we've had. Now, let's just hope they can withstand the August heat!

The last line of the book, "The Giving Tree," by Shel Silverstein, copyright 1964. This was a birthday gift from Rebecca. She put these words on this rock from the Schieber Farm that is under the maple tree of my shade garden, using her Cricut and a brown Sharpie permanent marker. This book just happens to be one of Kristin's favorite books that we read together whenever she spends the night at Grandma's house. THANKS, Rebecca!

It is now officially finished (I think)! Eric helped me finally get the shutters put up on Sunday. I've had them for probably two weeks, but we've been so busy to take time to get them on. But with 3 and a half inches of rain over the weekend, what else is there to do??

This is one of the yard ornaments from Helen Bright that she was giving away last week. I was thrilled to be the first to pick out some ornaments for my flowerbeds. i also got some assorted birds, a mushroom, and a seashell. One of the few benefits of working at the post office. (I get to read the bulletin board first!)
