managed to get the twig about a meter in front of me in perfect focus...the rest, however...is, as they say, a blur...

the church accompanied me on this full moon expedition from my hotel room into the night...the church and a couple of ciders...spent an infinite amount of time considering my insignificance in the scheme of it all...and not nearly enough time focusing...

carried my pole around kings canyon...it was a pretty impressive place...people try to say it is australia's grand canyon...they have obviously not travelled...but it was very very spectacular none-the-less...

took a few of these, liked this one as some people obliged me by mounting the mound ( at 8 o'clock on the shot), gives it a little perspective...

the best bit of the walk was scaring the tourists at the waterhole...a rare sighting of the greater australian albino land whale may have been made...i didn't see him, so i don't quite know what all the fuss was about...

uluru by moonlight...

photographing uluru is an interesting experience; after many years of a laissez-faire attitude to the place by visitors and management alike, the park is now very strictly controlled - there are a lot of places you just can't take a photo from...

so i stood for this shot with about a million other people, in a huge car-park facing the rock, all of us with our tripods...reminded me of the crowd scenes at cape canaveral from the sixties...all of us so intent on getting the same shot, but better, than the person next to us that we really forget to stand back, suck in a fly and gawp at the beauty of it...like someone is playing a huge joke on us all...

i scoped out my position the day before (they were all pretty crap), and arrived way early to stand smugly with my tripod and wide angle lens as the alsorans straggled in...

anyhoo, i stuck it out, watched everyone leave, and was rewarded with a splendid full moon rise over the rock...which i shot...and here it is...

might post a couple of earlier shots if you are interested...it was a beautiful site...flys and tourists notwithstanding...

on the first day we were at uluru we spotted two climbers literally running down its side in the late afternoon, piss-bolting to try to make it down before sundown...running almost in a panic.

the traditional custodians of the area ask that people do not climb the rock as it is disrespectful...which gave me a good out as it is bloody steep, bloody slippery and bloody scary...

this fella is climbing in socks and thongs (to the yanks that is socks and flipflops, not socks and a g-string...), which is in itself disrespectful to just about everything aussie...and pretty unforgivable really...

anyway, got a few shots before really thinking about the fact i was using a 300mm lens, too slow shutter so all have camera shake, except for the last which did not look as cool as this with the moon...so this is the one you get!

...well, in the gorge really...

this is part of ormiston gorge, the area i walked into after the previous shot...

earlier on the walls were far higher, and far shearer...and my photographic skills far too tested, so this one has water...one of the advantages of the pools of water is it makes it all look far more remote than the sandier parts, where miraid of footprints bely the tourist hordes...

still, like hanauma bay in hawaii, all the people who may have been there could not take away from the sheer beauty of the place...and i had it all to myself when i was there anyway...
welcome to the pound....

just back from a week and a bit in the northern territory...visited alice, kings canyon and uluru...

this is shot within ormiston pound, the valley that leads into the massive ormiston gorge...i did not visit here on my last trip, so was excited to get here...however...

we left the visit till late in the day, and had a couple of beers at a roadhouse...leaving me only a couple of hours daylight to do the 8km trip...there was not time to stop and smell the cycads...

freakishly good weather here in sydney at the moment...that is if you like the sun, sand and surf...albeit with a little too much of a nor-wester blowing.

this is taken on a bridge over to an island called "rocky point", and is around the corner from where my mum grew up...i have regaled you all with the story of her swimming off these beaches during the war and getting covered in oil from the sinking of miniature japanese submarines in the harbour...so will bore you with my own memories of this place...

on a similar sunny day in the middle of summer holidays when i was in my early teens, i met up with a group of lasses - including the sensationally long legged maria milkshake, beautiful gerry and amelia...i struggle to name any others...we spent the day on this little rocky island overlooking balmoral, and whilst it was all very innocent (in a sunday school picnic kind of way), this place always reminds me of a time when the only thing you had to worry about was getting sunburnt...or in the case of my mother, sump oil on your new swimmers...

i have an estranged uncle, my mother's brother, who has recently been in contact with the family...when i visited him he had a naive sketch of this same bridge on his wall, given to him by a US serviceman during that same period that my mother was getting oily...and his memories of the place were in a similar vein to my own...he does not have many possessions, but that little humble sketch holds pride of place in his heart...

and here that place is, represented as a little wee world, a microcosm of memories...

i have an estranged uncle, my mother's brother, who has recently been in contact with the family...when i visited him he had a naive sketch of this same bridge on his wall, given to him by a US serviceman during that same period that my mother was getting oily...and his memories of the place were in a similar vein to my own...he does not have many possessions, but that little humble sketch holds pride of place in his heart...

and here that place is, represented as a little wee world, a microcosm of memories...

in the recent sunny weather i have plonked the old planetoid doohey-whacky down at a few places, this has been the most adventurous yet...one slip and goodbye 7D...

i have found it is a great conversation starter too, spend an idle 20 minutes chatting to a woman from denmark waiting to catch the ferry, discussing topics like teenage binge drinking, the arts scene in sydney, and other assorted ramblings...

think i might take it to my next party...

yesterday my wonderful choir "soulfood" met at the QVB building in sydney's central business district and performed another flash mob wedding proposal...

the groom-to-be had arranged this all from overseas, and was in australia on holidays with his beautiful fiance-to-be with the aim of proposing...we were given a location (a cafe in the atrium of the QVB) and a signal (an horrendously fake yawn from the bloke), upon which a strategically placed group at the table next to them started singing stevie wonder's "you are the sunshine of my life"...by halfway through the second verse around 35 of us had congregated around, and the couple (she was still oblivious to his ruse) got up and danced, you can see the surprise and glee on her face...i was sure she was thinking "these australians are crazy!"

when we finished, he got down on bended knee and proposed...and after a few heart-stopping seconds she said yes!

the assembled crowd erupted into applause, and we (the choir) disappeared into the ether...

at the other end of building a young woman came up to me and said " you have the most beautiful voice, i could not hear anyone else..."

so i was able to leave tickled pink, only just squeezing my enormous head through the 3m wide arches of the beautiful QVB...

the groom to be had arranged this all from overseas, and was in australia on holidays with his beautiful fiance-to-be with the aim of proposing...we were given a location (a cafe in the atrium of the QVB) and a signal (an horrendously fake yawn from the bloke), upon which a strategically placed group at the table next to them started singing stevie wonder's "you are the sunshine of my life"...by halfway through the second verse around 35 of us had congregated around, and the couple (she was still oblivious to his ruse) got up and danced, you can see the surprise and glee on her face...i was sure she was thinking "these australians are crazy!"

when we finished, he got down on bended knee and proposed...and after a few heart-stopping seconds she said yes!

the assembled crowd erupted into applause, and we (the choir) disappeared into the ether...

at the other end of building a young woman came up to me and said " you have the most beautiful voice, i could not hear anyone else..."

so i was able to leave tickled pink, only just squeezing my enormous head through the 3m wide arches of the beautiful QVB...
