Chronograph / Leo Peschta

Ars Electronica posted a photo:

“The Chronograph” engraves the “acoustic moment” onto the object on which it’s mounted. The way it functions resembles the workings of a clock. Every minute, the “hand” advances a couple of degrees, whereby a bur attached to the hand cuts a groove into the object. The depth of the groove depends on the current noise level in the installation space. On busy days, the object’s surface is completely milled away; when things are quiet, it retains its original form.

LabDays - REPAIR: PappLab

Tables, chairs, benches—all furnishings at Ars Electronica 2010 were made of cardboard (German: Papp) cartons. Mastermind and workshop director of the PappLab responsible for turning out these objects is Linz artist Wolfgang Gratt (AT) aka Wodo. Now, under his expert guidance at the Ars Electronica Center, young and young-at-heart designers can come up with cardboard furniture of their own and, when they’re done, take their creations home with them.

The idea behind FabLab (from fabrication) is the capability of downloading objects from the internet and printing them out at home. And not just on paper; as real stuff! A 3D printer uses a computer model to generate an actual object, and a computer-controlled laser cutter does the high-precision shaping of any chosen material. Using the internet makes it possible to disseminate designs for articles of clothing or pieces of furniture just as easily as sharing music and pictures today.

ExpertBits: Chats with Johann Staudinger (JS EnviTec Environmental Technology) on Algae: The World’s Primordial Substance.

“I will repair the world.” Johann Staudinger’s (AT) mission is nothing less than replacing petroleum with algae and someday generating from plankton everything that’s now produced out of oil. Thus, “algae instead of petroleum” is his formula, one that’s designed to end our dependency on fossil fuels and avert the looming climatic catastrophe.
