Models: Stefanie Suttner (Dark Phoenix) & Madeleine Wagner (Storm)
Bodypainting: Tobias Kramer (de-de.facebook.com/tobystuff)

The second out of four motives for the Painted Heroes calendar. Have you ever wondered how a cape is mysteriously attached to the superhero's body? Well, me neither. Until I tried to attach the massive "Storm" cape to the model's body. We had to use lots of matic gum. And according to the brave model it wasn't very comfortable. At all. But she cut quite a figure anyway, don't you think?

Two photoshoots in front of a greenscreen and countless hours of editing went into this one. I hope you enjoy it!

Happy Holidays everyone!

Fellow Flickrees!

I know it's been an awfully long time since I've last been seen here on Flickr. But I can assure you I'm still alive and kicking. And as you can see I'm still into photography and creative editing. As a matter of fact, I've been quite busy throughout the past year. I've been working with a large creative team, consisting of 3 photographers (including myself), one bodypainter and a bunch of stylists and visagists to create a promo-calendar called "Painted Heroes 2013". Even a casting took place, and we had to choose our male and female models out of almost 90 applications from Germany and Austria. I had carte blance regarding the concept and execution of 4 out of 12 motives for the final calendar. Countless hours went into 8 seperate photoshootings, bodypainting, styling and a huge amount of photshopping, to bring my visions to life. The whole process was covered by local media and we had a huge amount of publicity. And last but not least, we had a BLAST creating the final product.

I'm proud to finally being able to present you the results of my work, that extended over almost a year of my life. I will upload the remaining 3 pictures in the coming weeks.

It feels so good to be back.

Cheers

****
EXPLORED May 8th, 2012
****

Model: Theresa
Bodypainter: Tobias Kramer (de-de.facebook.com/tobystuff)

Greetings, my fellow Flickrees! I know this might come as a surprise to you but yes, I'm still alive and kicking! And taking photographs again. Obviously. :-)

This one's the result of a collaboration with DJ and Bodypainter Toby. He's got hell of a talent and we will be working together again soon. He came up with this idea when we first met. He wanted to do a Kill Bill bodypaint and asked me if I could shoot and retouch it. He even provided the Hattori Hanzo replica. Poor Theresa had to sit and stand still for nearly 5 hours. The photo shoot itself took about 1,5 hours.

As you might have noticed I've been on a creative break lately. After finishing my 52 weeks project I hardly felt the urge to pick up my camera again. But since drama group was put on a hold for this year, I started to think about doing some bigger photo projects. And then my fellow photographer Andi came up with this intriguing idea for a calendar and asked me to get involved. It's called "Painted Heroes 2013", which means there's superheroes involved so I needn't give it a second thought *g*. For me, it's the biggest collaboration so far with 2 other photographers, one bodypainter and about 8 stylists / visagists. I ended up doing 4 of the 12 calendar sheets, including concept, shooting and processing. Right now we're choosing the models and shooting starts by the end of May. The whole project is covered by the local media and I can't tell you how excited I am about it! I don't know if or when I'll be able to post some results here on Flickr, but at least you will get to see some behind the scenes shots. Stay tuned! :-)

Strobist info: One Yongnuo YN560 at 1/2 power zoomed to 50 mm shot through a Westcott umbrella from high left. One Nissin Di866 at 1/2 power zoomed to 50 mm shot through a Westcott umbrella from low left (makes two aligned umbrellas, one on top of the other). One flagged LumoPro LP120 at 1/4 power zoomed to 24 mm from back left for some rimlight. All flashes were fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers.

|52/52 - this is it|

|md|photography| posted a photo:

This is it. It's finished. Over. Ended. Concluded. Finalized. Completed. Mission accomplished. The last entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

I'm uploading this image with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm glad that it's over. No doubt about it. I know, all you 365ers out there will shake their heads in pity, but to me, a 52 weeks project was all I could muster and even that regularly stretched the limits of my spare time. As charged and ready I was in the beginning, as drained and empty I felt towards the end. I think I've simply grown tired of photographing myself.
But on the other hand, it was a highly educational journey. I've grown accustomed to my gear and to standard lighting techniques. I've sped up my workflow, learned a lot about how to use Photoshop and last, but not least, I realized what's important when standing in front of a camera. And the best thing about this project was definitely the overwhelming and unexpected response it caused. People kept telling me constantly how much they liked my work and how inspiring I am to them. Funny, since there are many of them I look up to myself. I would have never ever considered myself to be a source of inspiration for anyone. I just wanted to make people smile. A goal I hopefully achieved.

Some of you asked me what my plans are for 2012, hinting towards another 52 weeks project. I'm deeply sorry to disappoint you. But there will definitely not be another binding photo project like this in 2012. Will I keep creating pictures? Most certainly! Will I keep pushing myself to do it on a regular basis? I fear not. I actually will lie down my camera for a certain time for two reasons: First of all I want to gain back the feeling of wanting to pick it up, not having to. Secondly I will concentrate my creativity on another project, namely our local drama group. I've been given the opportunity to write, direct and act in our next stage play. Since I temporarily suspended the drama group due to my photo project in 2011, I want to get involved again and immerse myself into something completely different. This will take up most of the time of early 2012, ending around Easter. Enough time to regain a certain, photographic momentum I guess. After that, I want to get back into model photography, with the main focus on creative editing. I want to expand my horizon towards on-location photography and combining it with my gained knowledge. Yeah, that's pretty much my plan for the upcoming year. Plus all the expected unexpected stuff of course. And there will be one or another half-marathon to run, too.

Now that you fought your way through this lengthy text there's only one thing left for me to do. Thanking you all for your overwhelming, continuous support! It has been an incredible experience for me. A very special thanks goes out to Alper, Alana and Laura, who wrote me those lovely, flattering testimonies. I will stay faithful to this beloved Flickr community and stay in touch with all those of you I've come to know a little better. And watch out, I might sneak in another self-portrait from time to time. I just can't help it... :-)

Oh, and another thing. Due to popular request (from Alexander *g*) there will be a photo book with all my collected 52 weeks images, available shortly on blurb.com. The majority of the work is already done, so expect an announcement in the coming week.

In the meanwhile, I wish you all a Happy New Year 2012!

Cheers

Here we go. This is a group shot of my very first lighting class I was teaching every Tuesday evening for the past 5 weeks. I had such a blast passing on the "Strobist" torch and according to them, it was educational and fun. And of course I had to do a group shot like this... :-)

**** EXPLORED December 18th, 2011 ****

The fiftieth entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr. Whoa, only two images left!

As I told you before the last images of this project have already been planned out in my head. Also I promised to put a little bit more effort in creating the finalists. So this one took me about one hour of shooting and about 3 hours of editing. Mostly extracting and shadow casting. As close to perfection as I could get in the available amount of time. Hope you enjoy it!

I can't even begin to imagine that this project is almost over. Seems like yesterday when I took the very first one...

Please press "L" to see the whole besiegement.

Camera info: ISO 200, 70 mm, f/6,3, 1/200 Sek.
Strobist info: One bare, flagged LumoPro LP120 zoomed to 28 mm at 1/8 power from back left and right for rim. One gridded Nissin Di866 with a lilac filter at 1/32 power zoomed to 24 mm pointed directly at the background behind me. One Yongnuo YN560 zoomed to 105 mm at 1/2 power shot through a Westcott collapsible umbrella from high front. All flashes were fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers. The camera was triggered by a Cactus V5.

The forty-eighth entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

To all those of you who wanna give me a tongue-lashing because I'm neglecting my 52 weeks project lately: talk to the hand! :-D

Sorry for another quick shot. But it is the last day of a very long and exhausting week of work, kitchen renovation, child's birthday party, lighting course and Christmas party (the latter was the more relaxing part of course). Coming Wednesday is "K-Day". That means no more kitchen renovation and more time for my weekly shot. And I'm so looking forward to a grand finale! :-)

Camera info: ISO 200, 50 mm, f/7,1, 1/200 Sek.

Strobist info: One LumoPro LP120 zoomed to 85 mm at 1/2 power shot through a Westcott umbrella at about 45° from front left and right. One bare Nissin Di866 with an blue filter gel at 1/8 power zoomed to 105 mm shot a the background behind me. All speedlites were fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers. The camera was triggered by a Cactus V5.

The forty-seventh entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

I know it's neither highly creative nor funny. But it's all I could muster this week. I spend every free minute with renovating our kitchen. I'm SO glad when K-Day (the day our new kitchen arrives) comes on December 7th. Furthermore I'm teaching a lighting class once a week which means unpacking and packing all my equipment for every single 52 weeks shot. I have planned some more sophisticated shots by the end of this project. When renovation and lighting class will be over. So please bear with me here. I pledge amendment! :-)

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that this is no real weapon. It's just an alarm gun.
Please press "L" if you want to see the big version.

Nothing fancy this week. Just an image I had in mind for quite some time now. Most work went into the lighting. The black and white separation in the background is not photoshopped. I think I'll upload the lighting setup to my blog in the coming days. If you can spot the color keyed part in this image, you may keep it *g*

You even might press "L" to see the whole nine yards.

The forty-fourth entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

This is what happens when I head down to my studio without the slightest idea what to shoot for this week and therefore rummaging in a storage room in the search for suitable accessories. And look what I found! A Jerk-in-the-Box! :-D Just kidding. I found an old accordion that I put to a good use... I hope you like its new purpose.

What else is new? Well, my wife returned from her vacation in Egypt two days ago (thank God!!), the kids are back and we started renovating our old kitchen today by tearing apart the old one. The renovation will consume the next four weekends and will hopefully lead to a brand new kitchen on December 7th. And on a side note: I finished the main story and all except for one side mission of "Arkham City". What a spectacular game!!

Please press "L" to see the big box!

Camera info: ISO 200, 50 mm, f/7,1, 1/200 Sek.

Strobist info: One flagged LumoPro LP120 zoomed to 28 mm at 1/8 power from back left and right for rim. One gridded Nissin Di866 with a purple filter gel at 1/16 power zoomed to 24 mm shot a the background behind me. One gridded Yongnuo YN560 zoomed to 80 mm at 1/1 power shot through a Westcott collapsible umbrella from high front right. All speedlites were fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers. The camera was triggered by a Cactus V5.

The forty-third entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

Sorry for this rather simplistic approach, but I had something like this in mind since the beginning of this project. And what better reason could there be to realize it as the release of the new Batman: Arkham City video game? :-)

Did I mention that I'm on vacation again? Well, not the kind of vacation one might suspect. My wife's enjoying her one week stay in Egypt (on her employer's account) while her dutifully husband stays at home with 2 kids, a dog, ten chicken, two rabbits, two mice and all the chores that come along with. To ease my mind I granted myself an Xbox 360 lately. If you'd excuse me now, I have to roam the streets of Arkham City... ;-) See ya next week!
Sorry Elana, but I couldn't resist this pun forever, could I? :-D
I think my wife actually enjoyed it a little, wrapping me up in bandages. Let me tell you it was the most uncomfortable shooting so far. Thank God I had the lighting set up before being turned into a mummy...
The bandages were clean as a whistle by the way. I added all the dirt and grain in post.

This is the forty-first entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

Facebooks are everywhere nowadays, aren't they?

I can't even begin to tell you how long it took me to edit this shot. Not because it was that difficult, but because every attempt just didn't turn out the way I wanted. I even went down to my studio again to re-shoot some images (namely my face on the book). I replaced the background, changed it back and forth, just to leave it the way it was in the first place. *sighs* Sometimes being a perfectionist (or a fusspot, for that matter) can be a real pain in the ass...

Press "L" to see the picture in-your-face!
Camera info: ISO 200, 50 mm, f/7,1, 1/200 Sek.
Strobist info: One flagged LumoPro LP120 zoomed to 24 mm at 1/4 power from back left and right for rim. One Yongnuo YN560 zoomed to 105 mm at 1/1 power shot through a Westcott collapsible umbrella from high front left. All flashes were fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers. The camera was triggered by a Cactus V5.

This is the fortieth entry for my 52 weeks project here on Flickr.

Again, this was already done before by Christophe Huet. But since I had this idea before I discovered Christophe's work I decided that only half the credit belongs to him this time ;-)

My special thanks goes out to NASA, who provided me with the original shot of Buzz Aldrin gazing back at Tranquility Base. The hardest part was trying to merge two completely different image qualities and color tones. I didn't succeed one-hundred percent. The perspective and angle was another thing I had a tough time with. But after a few hours of trying and (partly) succeeding, I decided to leave it at that. I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Camera info: ISO 400, 25 mm, f/7,1, 1/200 Sek.
Strobist info: Two LumoPro LP120 at 1/2 power zoomed to 24 mm shot through a bedsheet from behind the door. A Yongnuo YN560 at 1/2 power zoomed to 50 mm shot through a Westcott umbrella from front left. All flashes were fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers. Camera was triggered by a Cactus V5.
