Another Winter, another season up in Niseko. Just me for the first trip with some buds for 3 days. Conditions were pretty good with an average of 30cm of fresh snow every day.

Non-HDR shot at the end of a great day at the exit to what I call "second bowl" in the backcountry on the Annupuri side of the Niseko resort.

Backcountry Powder

Yet another ski shot from our latest and last trip of the season.

Non-HDR shot of Chizuko looking into the Annupuri main bowl. Was "okay" conditions as you can see here. Was a bit packed versus the super-dry we normally get. Weather certainly was uncharacteristically nice (at least when we were hitting the backbowls) which made up for the less-than-stellar powder we normally get.

I think this may be my first post with a my Casio Exilim I bought a few months back (bought it for the slo-mo shooting capability, but decided to see what it could do on this trip for all-around shooting).

Posted a shot 3 years back of Austin watching Mom and Travus go off to ski. He was none too happy as he and I had to hang out on the "baby" slope (he was 1 y/o after all ;-)

Now that he's 4 years old, he can go on his own down most of the intermediate and beginner slopes in Niseko.

Chizuko and I were having a discussion about who got the best powder that morning while James snuck up behind us and snapped this off ;-)

Went up for our third Niseko trip of the Season, and once again was able to score some great powder (as is usually the case up in Niseko).

Non-HDR shot of James in the first (main) bowl in Annupuri. This was our last bowl run of the day, and the Sun came out for just a few brief minutes so that we could enjoy *seeing* the valley and powder for a change!

Shot taken about 10 minutes after the bonfire was started of the fireworks display put on by the Chuo Bus Company that owns and operates the Annupuri Ski field which is part of the great Niseko Ski Resort.

I'm still not 1/2 way through posting my Hokkaido trip shots and am still only on the second day of the trip in regards to the shots :-(

Bummed because I start work tomorrow after being off for 3 months and am fairly certain I'm gonna be too tired/beat to post anything new in a timely manner. Will certainly do my best on the weekends, but even then we're normally out of Tokyo camping somewhere (and taking yet *more* shots!)

Non-HDR shot taken of the Moiwa side of the Annupuri backcountry during a short hike we took with the kids in the late afternoon. Was truly wonderful to get to see what this area looks like during the Summer, as I know it very intimately during the Winter :-)

Chizuko and I had been talking about it for the past 15 or so years we had been coming to snowboard in Niseko, but never did it.

*Finally* went up the mountain in the *Summer* time to take in the beautiful view of the Niseko area!

Been away from Flickr for a few days because was getting some of the above in Niseko. Conditions were "okay" for the trip, which by many other resort standards would be considered near-epic.

A pensive moment on my photostream for everyone...

2008 was tough. 2009 will be tougher.

I saved this shot for my last 2008 pic, as I believe there to be a lot of hopeful symbolism.

As this photo reflects, I hope that everyone has a smooth path with least resistance before them into brighter skies in 2009.

Annupuri Peak

Actually about 200m below the peak, but wasn't necessary to hike all the way to the top to score some of the best conditions I've had in years. Can't tell from this photo because this portion of the hike up is all windblown surface. Traverse over a bit, it and it was all knee deep+ powder.

To quote the NISEKO NOW report for that weekend describing the conditions:

"It was obvious from the pure tones of the alpenhorns this morning that the alpine overlord himself, Henrich von Dumpenhausen, was back in town ushering in some of the heaviest snowfalls of the season so far. Overnight to 6am we had around 45cm fall but it's only got heavier since then and there's been at least another 25cm through the morning and it's still duming out there. "

*70cm* of fresh powder. It was a lot to punch through, but was able to do so easily with my custom Donek snowboard which I had designed specifically for this mountain.

Niseko Bonfire

Went up to Niseko for our first trip of the Season and have to say it was a *great* trip. Always is every time we go, but this time was a bit more special as they had the "New Year's Eve" Bonfire and Fireworks on January 9th as Dec 31st was cancelled due to gale force winds. Was quite the treat watching the skiers come down the mountain with their torches; concluding at the bonfire pictured above; followed by a brief fireworks display (photos which I'll later).

Never would've expected a flower bed at the bottom of the Annuprui Quad lift in the Summer; especially as I'm used to seeing this area under about 2m of snow!

A bit of symbolism in this shot saying farewell to 2008, as it was when the significance of the Economic crisis became mainstream since starting in the Summer of 2007.
