Fairlie Moor Skull Near Sundown

This poor sheep was probably a victim of the harsh winter high on Fairlie Moor, but it did leave behind a magnificent piece of natural sculpture for us. I knew I would have trouble balancing the brightness of the soon-to-set sun and the shade side of the skull, so I set my Nikon D300s to RAW which allowed maximum amount of computer processing. It also allowed me to enhance the almost monochrome and - lets face it, grim - foreground as a contrast to the summer colours of the moor above the Firth of Clyde with the islands of Wee Cumbrae and Arran which I threw out of focus by using a fast shutter speed to limit the depth of field on my 10mm lens, isolating the skull.

If a showery day clears up a wee bit towards evening, the lingering cloud formations can produce spectacular sunsets. This is the tiny picturesque North Ayrshire hamlet of Portencross. I liked the way that the setting sun glanced off the window of the foreground cottage - imagine the view of Arran from that living room! From this angle, you can see Wee Cumbrae island on the horizon. I took 3 pictures with my new Panasic Lumix DMC TZ-40 pocket camera at different exposures to get highlight and shadow detail, then combined them as one image.

Whilst I'm sure that most of us would prefer more sunny weather at this time of year, it can't be denied that one of the features of living in Scotland - perhaps especially the west coast - is the spectacularly soft landscapes and seascapes made by our moist climate. This is the Clyde island of Arran peaking out from behind the late afternoon mist and showers as seen from the beach between Seamill and Ardrossan. This is my 71st "Picture of the Day" in Glasgow's "Herald" newspaper.
