Concept of this contest appealed to me, so took on the challenge to sculpt a sphinx, just winging it. Also drew inspiration from "300" in particular Xerxes' ride.

I feel Bricksmith ( mac LDRAW ) is the right tool to make models using a wide array of parts, i'm mainly a basic brick man - I lack specialized parts - so gonna use this again in the future to preview complex models.

The sculpture stands 125cm tall ( 4 ft 1¼ ) and is comprised of thousands of bricks.

To accommodate easy moving the statue comes apart in three components : pedestal, lower and upper body.

LEGO Specialized "S" logo : front view

I wanted to do a corporate LEGO mosaic for my portfolio and chose this well-known american bike manufacturer, mainly because of their radical designs, also perfectly reflected in the logo.

This mosaic is 96 x 64 studs ( approx. 77cm x 51cm or 30" x 20" ).

I started out with 6 Green Building Baseplates ( LEGO art 626 ) 32x32 studs, and built a framework of 2 studs wide plates at the edges and sealing the seams ( 3 high, so it matches the height of a basic brick ). The levels give the mosaic an extra sense of depth : the black area is lvl 3, the red rounded plates lvl 4, and the red area that makes up most of the logo is lvl 5 ).

Producing an intro for all my future youtube movies, a constellation of bricks that shift and turn until they form the Brick Projects Logo. It will be a short 3D movie with high-quality rendered bricks.

Primary resource is the excellent bricks library "LGEO" by El-Lutzo ( www.digitalbricks.org/lgeo.html ). The digital bricks are then processed in PovRay ( Raytracer : www.povray.org/ ) which requires scripting the camera and light source and defining the paths for the moving bricks.

Concerning future youtube movies, I hope to present my latest sculpture next week.

LEGO Yoshi ( 80 cm high ) is only slightly taller than Yoshi ( 77 cm ). In terms of volume however I think he's almost twice as big as the plumber.

DAY 5 : currently building Yoshi's cheeks and huge nose ( lvl 54 ).

I'm applying structural reinforcements in form of a red framework, in the following sequence : first row is solely comprised of 2x2 bricks (skipping one every other brick ), build a second row in 2x4 from left to right ( bridging the 2x2 bricks of the ...previous row ) while using 2x2 bricks at ...

Arms are finished ( lvl 38 ), I just started sculpting Yoshi's red turtle shell, which doubles as a saddle for Mario Bros in most Nintendo games.

The LEGO Yoshi sculpture is pushing my boundaries once more.
Because of its gravity defying nature ( think classic T-Rex pose ) I was considering working with lead counterweights in his duck-like tail.

At second sight this would make Yoshi cumbersome and uneasy to handle, not to mention the nasty balance exercise while building.
Recollecting the basic principles of physics - an object will topple once its plumb line falls outside of its base of support - and setting aside my purist LEGO convictions ( do not alter LEGO pieces ) ...

LEGO Super Mario has been auctioned off for charity, highest bid was 3500 euro / 5100 dollar by a GAME MANIA shopkeeper.
The proceeds went directly to Ronald McDonald, a dutch organisation that arranges proper housing for relatives of hospitalized children, in the vicinity of clinics.

Sculpture was exposed on LEGOWORLD 2009 in Zwolle (NL)

LEGO Mario - Day 14

16 october : sideburns, eyes and cap appear, the moustache has been finished ( lvl 111 ). It's hard to level up when it takes an hour to build one layer. This particular layer has color complexity : tan, medium blue, white, black, reddish brown and red.

Next week I will personally reveal this sculpture on behalf of Game Mania at LEGO WORLD on the main stage, thursday 22 october between 16h-17h.

Afterwards Game Mania will auction the sculpture off on Ebay for charity.
