redding brothers

The Redding Brothers are an indie rock trio from Nashville, Tennessee composed of brothers Micah (b. November 1, 1981 in Charleston, West Virginia), Josiah (b. August 19, 1983 in Charleston, West Virginia), and Gabriel (b. February 11, 1987 in Seattle, Washington) Redding The band is most known for their "Song of the Week" program in which the band members wrote, recorded, and released one new song each Saturday night at midnight for a complete year.

Since their inception, the band has produced 2 studio albums (a third is scheduled for September 2009 release), 4 EPs, and 2 singles, in addition to their 52 “songs of the week” (released progressively in digital-only format across 4 volumes). They have toured relentlessly since late 2003, having performed well over 320 dates as of this writing. The band performs mainly on the college and military circuits, and has toured all over North America, Southwest Asia, and parts of Africa.

The brothers are sons of Church of Christ minister Lawrence Redding, are all vegetarians, passively promote libertarian politics, and regularly delve into the philosophical in their music, lyrics, and album titles.

Their songs have been televised on NBC's WTAP-TV 5 and CBS's WOWK-TV 13 as well as heard on many radio stations including "The Cutting Edge" WMUL-FM 88.1, "Electric" WVSR-FM 102.7, "ZRock" WZJO-FM 94.5, "Festival of the Arts" on WCTC-AM 1450, and WKLC-FM 105.1. Their music has been featured and reviewed in many publications, including Marysville Globe, Arlington Times, West Virginia Gazz, Voiceboxx, Vibe, Bowling Green Daily News, Bellingham Herald, Shoreline Ebbtide, Charleston Daily Mail, The Parthenon, Charleston Gazette, Huntington Herald-Dispatch, Kanawha Metro, Putnam Metro, Putnam Herald, Putnam Post, The Putnam Standard, All The Rage, Nashville Scene, and more.

In addition to regional and national tours of festivals and college campuses, the band tours internationally in support of the United States military through an association with Armed Forces Entertainment.

just one of those days where i had to shoot an event i wasn't interested in. the crowd i guess was fascinated by this rapper/dj but all the songs he kept playing were unfamiliar as far as im concerned. anyway, i like the lights, mixers, gigantic speakers, and all the concert stuff they dumped on the stage. they were an added elements for my photos :)

a verse unsung

A Verse Unsung is an electrifying and aggressive rock group of four young guys from Minneapolis. They have just finished their first EP and are making a name for themselves in the Minneapolis rock scene. The band started a year ago when Jake and Dan began hanging out and writing songs on acoustic, a year later they have a full line up and over 15 songs written.

For their first EP they decided they wouldn’t settle for just any recording studio or producer. They ended up meeting Grammy winning producer Steve Hodge and local producer Colt Leeb and things clicked. Colt and Steve showed up to few practices and helped the band establish 5 solid songs to record. They recorded “The Autumn EP" this fall in Master Mix Studio’s less than a year after the band started. “This stuff has turned out REALLY GOOD” said Steve Hodge on the last night of recording A Verse Unsung’s EP. Hodge is known for his work as an engineer under Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at the now extinct Flyte Tyme Studios in Edina. Hodge has previously worked on more than 40 No. 1Billboard hits mostly in the Pop and R&B charts. He won a Grammy Award in 2001 for his remix of Janet Jackson’s “All for you”. He now works out of Master Mix Studio’s in Minneapolis, where he and Colt recorded A Verse Unsung.

AVU has now released their first EP and sold 500 copies within the first month. They have been playing shows all around the Midwest, and are planning a 2 week spring tour and a full summer tour. The band has also started production on their next batch of songs with producers Steve Hodge and Colt Leeb. They have decided to record another 5 songs, and will be releasing them sometime this summer. They will also be featured in the March edition of Access Magazine as “Best new artist”. The Buzz continues to grow about A Verse Unsung from their fiercely aggressive performances to their hard hitting CD so next time they come through your town check out their show and pick up a copy of there new CD!

Onam Festival

Onam (Malayalam: ഓണം) is the largest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. It falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar which is Chingam (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala's culture and tradition. Intricate flower carpets, elaborate banquet lunch, snake boat races, Puli Kali, and the kaikottikkali dance all play a part in the festival.

Onam is an ancient festival which still survives in the Modern times. Kerala's rice harvest festival and the festival of rain flowers which fell on the Malayalam month of Chingam celebrated the annual visit from pathalam of the very noble Demon King Maveli. Onam is unique since king Maveli is revered by people of Kerala from prehistory.

According to the legend, Kerala witnessed its golden era during the reign of King Mahabali. Everybody in the state was happy and prosperous and the king was highly regarded by his subjects. He was that much highly regarded among the subjects that even the Gods under Indra became jealous of Mahabali, they approached Mahavishnu claiming that Mahabali is now equivalent to an Indra. Since a world with two Indras represents imbalance, Mahavishnu assumed the form of a dwarf: the Vamana avatara and tricked him to Pathalam, the Underworld. However, as Mahabali is equal to an Indra, he is to wait until the next Yuga where he would be the Indra. In the meantime, with the grace of Mahavishnu, Mahabali visits his people on an annual basis. Mahavishnu serves Mahabali as a gatekeeper in the world of Pathalam as the Lord himself serves his greatest devotees.

It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

The rich cultural heritage of Kerala comes out in its best form and spirit during the ten day long festival. The most impressive part of Onam celebration is the grand feast called Onasadya, prepared on Thiruonam. It is a nine course meal consisting of 11 to 13 essential dishes. Onasadya is served on banana leaves and people sit on a mat laid on the floor to have the meal.

Another enchanting feature of Onam is Vallamkali, the Snake Boat Race, held on the river Pampa. It is a colourful sight to watch the decorated boat oared by hundreds of boatmen amidst chanting of songs and cheering by spectators.

There is also a tradition to play games, collectively called Onakalikal, on Onam. Men go in for rigorous sports like Talappanthukali (played with a ball), Ambeyyal (Archery), Kutukutu and combats called Kayyankali and Attakalam. Women indulge in cultural activities. They make intricately designed flower mats called, Pookalam in the front courtyard of the house to welcome King Mahabali. Kaikotti kali and Thumbi Thullal are two graceful dances performed by women on Onam.
