I showed you already in the past some photos of this wonderful town in the south of Germany, Freiburg. Here is now my second part. Beautiful street scenes at a nice and sunny summer day.

But, what doing if you are at a wonderful place but the weather is bad. Coming back again, when the weather is better? Sometimes not an option. In such a case I would replace the sky.

Winter Wonderland in Munich

I personally like the different seasons in the year and was all the time blessed to live in cities, where every season has its own typical weather. This chances your envirnoment dramatically and give a lot of opportunities to shot the same landscape in complete different "outfits". I think it must be a bit boring, if you have everyday sun shine and 24 degrees!? Both Germany and Boston offer this variety.

The following photos I made an my last trip to munich in january. I hope you enjoy the winter landscape. Please watch it in larger. You see more details.

Upper Lake in New York Central Park

The Central Park is really a fascinating green in the middle of a loud and hectic city. I personally like very much the northern more calm part of it. This photo is of the upper lake towards the upper east side. You can see parts of the Guggenheim.

Technique: 2*3ex+-2EV HDR panorama, photomatix, f6.7, 1/180, 2*18mm, topaz adjust, glamour
glow.

Crossing at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich

People who following me regularly, know that I once worked in Munich and have special connection to that place. Especially, the crossing near the Ludwig-Maximilians-University was everyday on my way. In a week I will have the chance to go there back again for a week. I'm really looking forward and todays photo is a tribute to this.

Technique: 3EX+-EV, Nikon D90, F13, 1/350, Iso100, photomatix, Nikon color contrast, topaz adjust.

Panorama Cape Arcona

Cape Arcona is at the top of Ruegen Island. It really a nice spot, but on this evening it was everything perfect. You have nice fields of wheat and green, you have sea , you have coast, you have light houses. If you also get a nice sunset, you have all the parts for a very powerful shot.

The Photo is an HDR, but the scenerey was really very colorful and it was exciting to observe the sunset.

Boston Common - The last warm days

It's time for new (or old) Boston. Same position as my infrared shot, but now in HDR.

Afterward I try to use a infrared software filter reproduce my infrared picture. I try my best, but the result is very disappointing.

Learning: Forget infrared software filter and buy a real infrared filter. It's fun and you get really great photos.

Some of you have seen my moon pictures over Boston. Because of the incredible high dynamic, it is most times a challenge to shot the very lighty full moon over a cityscape and see every detail.

If you ignore the details of the moon you get also a very nice effect. The moon looks more as a very dark soon that only powers on 1/8th. Because of the long exposure also all kind of lights of the city get into the sensor. I like it.

Boston Common in HDR infrared

This is my first attempt to combine infrared pictures with HDR.

My experience with this is mixed.
- the IF pictures have a reduced color specturm. Thus, HDR has not so much to play with
- IF photos can have some weird color effects. This gets really hard to handle in the HDR process
- IF needs ca. 10sec per exposure. The HDR needs this three times. Thus, movement of clouds and leaves cannot be prevent.

In total, I like the result above. Although I must confess, that not everything was under my control. The blurry edges are from the inferior equipment I used (I needed to take the IF filter between two lenses). Although I didn't had the color completely under control ;-)

At the University in Munich (Night)

I really love Munich. It is a very beautiful city with a lot of nice weather over the year and the chance to ski in the Alps at the weekend. I worked several year in that town and on the pictures you see the area where my office was. Isn't that great ?

Moon over Boston

Optical illusions are hard to grasp still when you know it is one. I asked myself several times, why is the moon tonight so big. Mostly it was only because I could see it with something together that I knew that it is big. This photo here, was a lucky shot, that I made when I crossed the bridge to BU. From there you can see Boston down town in the distance and all of the sudden the moon was rising.

Technically it was challenging to make. I need to take a long focal length (sorry for the not perfect quality), the dynamic range between the moon and the scene is incredible large, and the moon is pretty fast for a night shot. The shot is an HDR with 6 Exposure.

I also like that you can see all the different colors of artificially light (green, orange, white, blue) in this shot.

A different World in Infrared (Boston/Cambridge)

It is fascinating to imagine, that we only see a very restricted wave-length of light. If we would see more, we can see sound, radio waves or warming waves. On way to discover a new world is infrared photography. Theses are photo that are made out of light that we can not see. Fascinating and in someway surreal.

The photos looks like winter, but they have been captured in the middle of the summer. Some of the spots you know already.

We try sometimes so hard to find a nice object to make a good shot. But, it is so easy to look just above us and observe the sky, the sun, and the moon. They all shine in so different lights and colors that still the best camera is not capable to capture what we experience in that moment. Since I shoot photos, I realize much more how beautiful our sky is and that it is almost everyday a situation where it is worth to make a photo.

One Evening in the Biergarten

At the weekend I was in Bamberg. Bamberg is a lovely small German Town with a lot of young students, small houses, and old churches.

In the evening we went up to a nice Biergarten on a Hill. It was nice weather and a great atmosphere. I hope you can feel it a bit.
