Loggerhead Shrike With Grasshopper

This photo was taken down in Everglades National Park late last year!! I was on the shadowed side of the Shrike when I took this photo, but still got fairly good lighting on the head of the bird. As always thanks for looking and see everyone on Wednesday!!

Virginia White Tailed Deer Sparing During Rut

Kevan is busy today so I selected another of his Deer images. It was really amazing to see the interaction between the bucks during the rutting season. These two came very close to a blind that Kevan was using.

Sandhill Crane Adult First Year Young

Here's another image of one of our favorite birds. Adult Sandhills are very attentive parents and the young stay with the parents for quite a while. The front bird is the adult, the back one is a first year bird.

Sandhill Crane Fluffed Up

Kevan & I love photographing Sand Hill Cranes. They are such a regal bird standing almost 4' tall with a 5-6' wingspan. Most of them don't seem to mind us being near them at all.

Sandhill Crane In Flight

If you have never heard a Sandhill Crane calling in the early morning, you are missing one of nature's most beautiful calls!! In Florida, we have two populations of Sandhill Cranes. One is non-migratory and the other is a large migratory population that is present all winter, throughout most of Florida except the Panhandle !! That is one of the reasons the Feds are so interested in Florida for the reintroduction programs for the Whooping Crane. Well, as always, thanks for looking and all the comments!! Kevan is at a conference today so I picked this image to share. This image was taken on the Outer Banks of North Carolina at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on a cold winter day. These birds are ground dwellers and I caught him on the edge of the marsh.

Great Horned Owls Mating

First off I want to thank Alan for sharing his Owl with me. I received a call from Alan about two month ago and he told me about a Great Horned Owl he watched eat a Common Gallinule just after dark. So the next night, I joined Alan and we set up our camera gear and waited until sunset. About 15 minutes after sunset, a Great Horned Owl flew into a tree near us, we set our settings and flashes and then the male flew in and they mated!! This was the only photo I took that night, but I was very pleased!! But the other part of the story is having friends like Alan that are as happy to share as they are to get the photo.. Thanks Alan!!!

Kevan shot this image at Sea Oats Beach on Lower Matacumbe Key, in the Florida Keys, on a windless morning with a flat sea. We were on our way to Hawk Watch at Curry Hammock State Park and saw the first light of the sunrise so we decided to stop to see what would happen.

White Tailed Deer Buck Warning Foot Stomp

This was one of the last shots of the day and just before dark as the dominate buck came out of the woods. I was in one blind photographing a fawn which you will see soon and Kevan was in his blind and had this deer come within 50 feet of him. You could really see how ramped up he was. You just knew he knew we were there when he started stomping his foot which is a show of aggression. The image actually turned out pretty good considering it was shot at a low shutter speed and wide open.

In October in South Florida, the Deer Rut starts and the big bucks will try to show their dominance with the hope of attracting all the does in their territory. These two big bucks came very close to the blind I was in. I couldn’t photograph the complete Deer so when they passed each other I took advantage of the opportunity to take this photo!! Osprey Landing On Another Osprey With Fish Everglades National Park

Feed Me!! This is what we believe is one of last years baby Ospreys returning to the nesting area to grab lunch!! The adult birds were in the process of rebuilding the nest for this year and they kept chasing this Osprey away!! The young bird finely left the adults to finish the nest for this year's family!!

Snowy Egret Trying to Catch Fish

VIEW LARGE - Kevan shot this Snowy Egret as he calls it “Fly Fishing”. The Snowy Egrets will slowly fly close to the water and stab fish as they see them while in flight. I guess it’s one way to avoid alligators! It also seems like these birds must be really good at mulit-tasking, (unlike some husbands I know….).

Kevan & I hope to see some of you at the reception tonight for our exhibit. For those of you who are out of the area, we’ll post some images next week.

Kevan shot this image earlier this year of this Mottled Duck in flight. He is tied up with work so I got to pick the image. He has shot a lot of ducks in flight this year and I thought this was a good image to start out with.

Snail Kites are highly endangered in Florida and continue to do poorly!! This year almost all the nests failed in South Florida, because of introduced Apple Snails and water levels !! This Snail Kite has just grabbed an Apple Snail and is just pulling it out of the water. Thanks again for looking and your wonderful comments !!
