Out with the old, in with the new

The old British car industry may be largely gone, but a whole new industry has been built for the supply of spare parts for the surviving products.

These are Triumph Spitfire brake calipers. The shiny new ones are soon to be fitted to my giant rolling Meccano set, a 1976 Triumph Spitfire 1500. I know the old, original calipers were rebuilt at least twice before, so I deemed it prudent to treat my car to some spanking new front wheel brakes.
Up until recently, owners had to overhaul or rebuild their old brake calipers or exchange calipers for rebuilt items. Now brand new brake calipers are available again.

Who knows, if this goes any further, we may be able to extend the life of these cars indefinitely! New chassis, new bodies, engines, the possibilities are endless. A bit like the street sweeper who swept the streets for fifty years with the same broom. OK, he did exchange the handle twenty times and the head at least sixty times, but it was just the one broom!

Windmill 'Woldzigt' ('Wood view', although there are no woods near it) was built in 1852 for pressing linseed oil. After 160 years, it is still operational, although only in weekends.

The miller can be seen taking the sails off the whips. I learned a new Dutch word today: afzeilen. That is what this is called in Dutch.

One of my favourite KAP haunts is the tallest purpose built climbing tower in the world, which is on the outskirts of the Northern Dutch city of Groningen. With 37 metres in height and 11 meters of overhang, it's scary to look at and even scarier to climb.

One of my favourite haunts is the tallest purpose built climbing tower in the world, which is on the outskirts of the Northern Dutch city of Groningen. With 37 metres in height and 11 meters of overhang, it's scary to look at and even scarier to climb. Taking kite aerial photographs here is also a challenge.

KAPturer - the Book

At last, after a year in the making, it is here: my own Kite Aerial Photography book.

The title 'Tussen keukentrapje en helikopter - Stad en ommeland vanuit een vlieger' translates as 'between stepladder and helicopter - city (of Groningen) and its surrounding seen from a kite'. The title refers to the aerial photography no man's land I operate in.

Hard cover, 144 pages, full colour, with just enough text (sorry, Dutch only) to understand what you're seeing.

It will be available online, but you can also ask in your own bookshop for ISBN 9789491065392. Alternatively, I can supply signed copies by post. E-mail address in my profile.

I'll have a talk with light images about my work in Groningen's largest bookshop Selexyz on Saturday 17 November at 13:00 hours. If you're there, I'll be more than happy to sign your own copy of the book.

KAP rig & controller in a box

After years of stuffing my trusty and prized KAP rig in a cheap & nasty plastic box, I decided it was time to treat it to a proper container. Foam lined, with space for the Dunecam controller.

This one came from Conrad, a well known German electronics mail order company.

TV star

Having a book published is one thing, but it also involves dealing with the media. Today I spent two enjoyable hours filming a two-minute item for a regional TV station (RTVNoord). I'm quite looking forward to seeing the end result.

Low level Kite Aerial Photography. Heavily overcast weather, so not a good KAP day, but apparently excellent light for videotaping.

Update September 6: that was quick, the video is already online. Also available on YouTube. Sorry, Dutch only.

Niehove, the Netherlands

The Northern Dutch Hamlet of Niehove, possibly some 2200 years old and built on a man made hill. Very small, with a 13th century church in the middle and a good place to live in Summer.
