A rather bedraggled looking Willow Tit. I think it was a female but could never tell whether the other bird was feeding her or not. I think that she was probably feeling the heat today!

A rather cluttered image with difficult light but, still, I hope that you like it and all comments and criticisms are welcome.

Had a great couple of mornings at the local nature reserve during the weekend - it felt great to be out with spring underway. Don't get me wrong, I do really like the winter but it's nice when all the little young'uns hatch out.

On this is image, I used high pass filter, cropped, removed a small leaf from the side of the image as well as a few flecks of either skin or parts of reed (very tiny) off the feathers - that was me being rather pedantic when editing.

Snakes Head... er... plant?

Somebody said that this plant was called a Snakes Head something. Fritillary? Anybody know? We don't know where it came from - it just turned up at the local nature reserve.

I was lying on the ground to try to get as little reed stubble in as possible. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite manage it - a small bit has been removed from the bottom left of the image.

Blackbird nesting

Spring has apparently arrived... A friend told me that there was a Blackbird nesting in his garden at the local Church. He said to bring my camera - wasn't sure whether I needed a macro or not? In the end, I didn't really want to get that close so I used my macro and converter. Anyway, I didn't want to get too close but this female sat there and, after the first camera shutter click, she seemed to sit and be fairly relaxed. I couldn't see the male so I don't know where he was.

Such a peaceful morning. I've never seen an owl perch up on the posts like this... only the pictures from fellow photographers!!! This Owl is, again, not 100% sharp. I think that the sun was actually burning off the dew and it was causing a haze. Before we could get closer, he flew off. A beautiful moment.

Short Eared Owl habitat

This is the kind of place that I like. Peaceful and with some Owls to see, if you're lucky. You'll have to spot the owl! I can't believe that there is thought of ploughing up this land for Oil Seed Rape - it would never be the same. Such a beautiful landscape gone.

In this image, I cropped to pano, and removed a Crow sat on the wires. If you look closely, you'll see that the Owl is not actually in focus!

Blossom

Had a nice walk around today without the birding lens and saw so many birds! Anyway. I only had the macro and wideangles with me. This blossom looked pretty so I gave it ago backlit (that sun is bright!).

In post processing, I upped the exposure a tad more, vibrance up a little with a little more saturation, too. I purposely used a warmer colour temperature. Spring is trying to get here! Oh, I also cloned a dead bit of flower from the bottom (quite small, but wasn't so sure about in shot)

Goldcrest

I found a couple of Goldcrest yesterday whilst out and about. I had a go at photographing them. This was the only one I think that looks alright. I tried to remove the small twig at the top left corner but could not make it look right so I left it in.

Got out this morning but didn't stay for very long. I only took three images all of this Magpie flying toward the hide. This is the only one that I'd like to show. I don't know if the head is sharp?

Chaffinch

Purchased a tripod a few days and really had to get out and try it... Then some snow came to test it in. This allowed me to try out my coat!! Good test day!

This Chaffinch was coming back and forth to the feeders for his fill and yet in the cold, still had enough energy to chase after another male!

I don't know if this Rook was particularly brave or whether he was just so hungry in the cold weather that he flew down whilst I was under my camo netting... usually they're very flighty.

P.S. The Rook is on the bird feeding station. There are feeders on the station - I've just cloned the top of both of them out in this image.

Snow drop... in snow...

When I saw the snow, I had to try to get an image of the snowdrops - this is the best I could do in the ten minutes I had spare. When I got home, I found that the Snowdrop I'd chosen was pretty grubby so cleaned off the soil particles and sand grains off the white petals.

It was a really good spring morning with a bit of mist and some golden light. I went to sit next to one of the lakes to see what was happening. Unfortunately, this Coot was the only one that didn't mind me - all the others cleared well away! But he (or she) was excellent to watch.

I tried to get a shot of the Bittern just as he or she jumped out of the reeds but it wasn't to be. I managed three out of about 6 or 7... nearly half keep rate... nearly!

Starling murmuration

On the evening that we were to leave Whitby, we noticed a very large flock of Starlings swirling around over the town. By the time I'd found my boots and got out, there were fewer but I found the roost site and I attempted to photograph them with a wideangle to try to include a few more in shot.

I don't think that this is the sharpest of images (some motion blur) but I hope that you like it and all comments and criticisms are welcome.

Purple Sandpiper

As we were walking down the sea wall, me and Dad spotted a bird on the rocks and to my dismay saw a Purple Sandpiper - the first I have seen. I climbed around the rocks to try and get closer. I soon noticed that I was moving into rock pools so gave up! Next time...

This shot has had a light desaturation of the background and a slight increase in saturation of the bird so it stands out a little more. A bit cluttered but still - next time...

Whitby stars

During our weekend in Whitby, I was hoping to try photographing the stars because I'd seen an incredible image of stars in the Alps. In the Alps you don't have to fight against street lights though... I know I've missed the top of this arch and when I tried to turn the camera to portrait, someone in the CCTV booth turned on the street lights down this dark avenue so I could not complete the image! How jolly inconsiderate!
