Just wrapped up a super-fun photoshoot with the very personable Eli Purchase on this beautiful Yellowknife afternoon - one of my favourite photoshoots yet!

Big thanks to Tara for her fantastic help, and Eli for being a patient guinea pig!

Lighting info: three-light set-up. Key light is an Elinchrom studio light, to my left, modified by an Elinchrom Rotalux softbox. Rim light is a 2nd Elinchrom, bare bulb with a reflector (over his shoulder to his left). Finally, a third background light, powered pretty low, throwing a little fill light into the area behind Eli.

I spent the afternoon bouncing around Yellowknife and surrounding area photographing one of the most beautiful models I've yet photographed - Dene elder Mary Louise Drygeese.

Temperature: -29C
Photo assistant: Christopher Gatto

Lighting info: for this, I used both the natural backlight from the sun balanced by a single Elinchrom studio light, located to my right and about 7-8 feet from her, modified by an Elonchrom Rotalux softbox.

From a Canada Day Weekend wedding in beautiful Ottawa, with the iconic Canadian Parliament Buildings in the background.

This image has a bit of an HDR feel (although wasn't shot as HDR...the unique clouds have that edge to them).

Lighting info: pretty simple set-up. Off-camera Canon 430EX flash without a modifier, held by a buddy about 6 feet in front of me and to my left - triggered by Pocket Wizards.

Eyes On The Arctic

A Canadian Ranger, operating in the High Arctic (on Ward Hunt Island, northwest of Alert) in tandem with regular Canadian Forces, seen in the background.

The Rangers are considered the "eyes and ears" of the Arctic and I have an incredible amount of respect for the work they do.

This was photographed on assignment for Above&Beyond magazine, covering the Canadian Forces "Operation Nunalivut" in 2010.

Alright, so I'm pretty sure when my groggy participants of my "Photographing The Night Skies" workshop roll out of bed this morning and read this, they'll groan.

Last night the workshop went really well. Unfortunately, the skies didn't cooperate and it remained pretty socked in. Until about 15 minutes after the last group of die-hards left.
...
I went back to my studio at 1AM to tidy up, starting driving home, and saw the sky open with a really nice, intense show.

Tired = yes. Resist? Not a chance....

Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Park en route to Fort Simpson is known for some not terribly huge but very scenic falls. Got lots of shots of the actual falls I was happy with, but I must have took 75 frames of this rainbow trying to get it just right (its intensity varied with the amount of mist second-by-second).

ISO 400, Canon F/4.0-5.6 100-400MM L-Series lens @ 260MM. F/9, 1/640-second exposure.
