American White Pelican

Fotos by Dee posted a photo:

OK, so I went to the refuge tonight, amazing light, went around twice. The second time I saw 3 big white blobs from afar, was thinking swans, but the blobs were first of all a lot bigger and second the swans have been long gone. So I drive around the corner and look through my lens.... Almost lost my cookies and dropped the lens.... 3 American Pelican. 7 years I have been going there consistently I have never seen one there.... So these are probably just passer-bys and will be gone soon... what a bummer, because of the high cattails the camera had a hard time focusing so this is about the only decent photo I got of them. I am still in shock lmao

American White Pelican

I think these baby Grebes are just the cutest, amazing how they survive considering how much time their parents spend under water looking for food and leaving these babies by themselves on the surface

Been lusting after these birds for a few years now, always seem to miss an opportunity or get the images and then my daughter loses the card on the way from the kitchen to the garage which is no more than 20 feet. Finally last night, Jeremy and I went out for 2 hours and we both were able to get some images of one of my favorite birds. I suppose I'll have to make him an account soon and hubby too, he joined the photography club that seems to be settling into our house.....

The Art of Griping

Fotos by Dee posted a photo:

Photography is something some people don't seem to appreciate or respect. As I was trying to capture this little Killdeer, while getting griped at by her, hanging out of the window of my husband's Honda CRV, btw, the back windows don't go all the way down, they stick out about 5 inches and there's nothing we can do about it, so trying to get an angle downward with a big lens out of an already low sitting vehicle to get this little girl on the ground, here comes a "person" not gonna say what I really wanna say about this person.... shooting passed me in the car while MY car is stopped, turned off and the lens hanging out with me attached, all of that was visible to this person and still they zoomed passed my car and scared the bird off. I gave her "the look" and was hoping I'd catch up with her later on, but all that could come out of my mouth at the time was "REALLY?!" and she was already gone as was the Killdeer. I never got a chance to give this woman an earful as she must have just raced around the refuge and and split.
Last week I had a similar but different incident with a photographer, you currently can get out of your car at the refuge, it was the most amazing light and I saw one of my favorite subjects, the yellowheaded Black bird, not too far up the road and quite close. So there was this car ahead of me, a photographer, when in horror I see him stepping out of the car, black bird... what black bird..... the only satisfaction I got was him, due to his stupidity, not getting the image either.
What's up with people????

Trying to get back in the "saddle" so to speak. Lots has happened, been dealing with a sick horse since Oct. last year and my back health is pretty much in the gutter. Looking at surgery as a possible option which has me worried and many little odds and ends that life throws your way.
I look at it as taking a long break from photography, but I have to say I sure missed it and am working my way back.
This photo was taken about 3 weeks ago at our Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge

Trying to get back in the "saddle" so to speak. Lots has happened, been dealing with a sick horse since Oct. last year and my back health is pretty much in the gutter. Looking at surgery as a possible option which has me worried and many little odds and ends that life throws your way.
I look at it as taking a long break from photography, but I have to say I sure missed it and am working my way back.
This photo was taken about 3 weeks ago at our Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge

Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)

Another jewel from my day out with my daughter.

I have always liked double-crested Cormorants, I find them fascinating, dinosaur like birds. They are also, at least in our area, very shy birds that hardly give you an opportunity to get any decent, posting-worth, images of them.
This bird however gave me the brief opportunity yesterday to snap away about 10 images before he split. I had to "sneak" up on him, if that's possible with a 2-ton vehicle, I watched him careful as I inched forward, of course he was on my daughter's side of the car and she generously loaned me her shoulder to stabilize my camera/lens.
Below is the original so you can get any idea how close I was to this bird at 400mm

I am tired of being depressed and feeling sorry for myself, I am missing out on so much by hiding in my house. This morning my daughter asked me to go to the refuge and I jumped up and said, sure lets go!!! Nothing much going on, but I did manage to pick up a few jewels, these incredible eagles, I will never stop being fascinated by them, are just the first 2 :)
