i didn’t post yesterday as we had a dog emergency in the family!

the above shot shows a baby guillemot with what is probably his dad

once they are this age they go to the edge of the cliff, ready to make the jump that gives them their name – jumplings!

the below is the first time id actually seen one jump – as they usually do it early evening

taken from the boat, and not good enough to post – but they tell a sweet story!

despite my protestations that ‘i don’t do people’ when it comes to photography, i actually managed to shoot a number of people shots the other week

however being so far out of my comfort zone its taking me ages to process them – so i haven’t had time to process anything new since the farnes – so apologies for anyone who is puffined-out – i will try and get on to some new shots soonish!

hope everyone had a fab weekend – mine was split monsoon saturday and scorching sunday! – however this meant fairburn is flooded again – unfortunately this year has been pretty devastating for the ground nesting birds, but my robins are still in and out feeding so fingers crossed for them!

this fella looked please with his catch!

these are apparently greater sandeels – and are a quite a bit longer than the regular sandeels we usually see the puffins with (see below shot)

im not sure on their status at the moment – but i know that regular sandeel numbers and in decline, causing a real problem for the seabirds that are dependent on them

a lot of the puffins do this stretching while they are waiting to go out to sea and fish

it’s quite a common pose, but i liked the bokeh background too!

here a pair of guillemots stand up to a herring gull

and below yet another of a herring gull predation - he looks like he has a guillemot chick here – but one thing we did notice is that on a couple of occasions, the chicks predated did look ‘muddy’ and dishevelled as if maybe they had died anyway and the gulls were just scavenging rather than taking live chicks

this is one of the old stone structures on the farns, and they are often used as perching places for the puffins and other birds

pecking order

so iv shown, in some of my previous shots, that the herring gulls and the blackbacks are fearsome predators

well here a gentle kittiwake shows her position in the pecking order seems to be above the poor guillemot too!

the shot above shows a poor guillemot getting a little too close to a protective kittiwake – and she grabs his neck in her beak!

(the shot below was taken a second before she lunged at him)

one of the great things about the farns is that as they are both small islands that you can walk all the way around – you get very different looks pointing in different directions

this was taken in the opposite direction to the bokeh-sea shots

hope everyone is having a good weekend, weather here is so weird going from brilliant sunshine to chucking it down again and again!

another wider shot to help give an idea of scale on the islands

here a herring gull surveys the colony of guillemots looking for an opportunity to grab an unguarded chick

and below he thought he spotted something and jumped down into the crowd – but on this occasion left empty handed

these are a pair of guillemots – and the one on the left, who looks like he is wearing a monocle, is a bridled guillemot

they have a white ring around the eye, and a white line stretching out from it

they are not regarded as a subspecies, just an example of dimorphism

approximately 3% of guillemots are bridled on the farnes

however, what i didn’t get an answer to was : what the chances of this little chick being bridled when he grows up? so if anyone knows the answer i’d be interested!

another grisly shot im afraid! (sorry)

i posted a shot the other day of some scrappy lesser black-backed gulls, well this fella is a greater black-backed gull

the normally fearsome herring gull has to just stand by and watch as this huge fella takes his prize (another guillemot chick im afraid)

just liked this shot as that beak is just so striking!

in case anyone didn’t see my shot the other year of the baby puffin - called a ‘puffling’ - i have posted it again below to show how different they look without the bright beak

it’s very rare to see pufflings as they live in burrows and when they are ready to leave they make a run for the sea under cover of darkness
