I just wrapped a new feature article about climbing Malaysian Borneo's majestic Mount Kinabalu. My story is a light-hearted account of my bumbling attempt to summit all 4,095 m of the 20th tallest mountain in the world (by virtue of topographic prominence) in a pair of shorts, a $1 t-shirt I picked up in the Siem Reap Night Market and a pack consisting of 3 AA batteries, a broken compass and a shocking inability to gage the severity of the elements.

I wanted to add a few more photos to the package before I sent it off to my editors, so Megan and I made for the woods to create what is, in a way, a visual retelling of our two fateful days on the mountain. A recreation, if you will, in the same vein of America's Most Wanted or Rescue 911 - a dramatization based in fact. I think it worked out pretty well. Thanks for all your help, Megan!

I started to get the hang of the ND1000 filter our second trip out to Phi Phi Don. Most of my frames with it at Maya Bay were a bust - just didn't know what I was doing - but I like the look of these. The best part about it is there's not much of a colour cast like with some other filters I have, so you don't lose any saturation or contrast... assa!

I'm back on the Thailand kick tonight because two new blog entries are live and in colour; In Deep Curry Part 4 and 5, the latter a special entry written by guest writer Kevan Spanton.

Go on, have a look.

The black-and-white long-exposure dodge-and-burn 1x1-crop is probably my favorite style of photography.

I mean, what's not to like about something like this , or like this ?

That being said, I like to find my own way. I think I may have done that here... there can't be too many people out there using flash and ND1000 filters together with their tripods in three feet of salt water.
I liked this best out of a few long exposures because of the comp - it's not as busy as some of the others. Tricky doing this kind of thing with a non-metering fully manual lens, but the results are usually pretty sharp.

I wanted to do a little strobist work down at the dock, but the wind was blowing pretty hard so I didn't want to push things (I had already broken a strobe, an umbrella and two triggers at the beach earlier in the week). Some of the local kids - we've got Matt, Claire and Jon here - were happy to indulge me for a moment as I dropped the camera on the tripod and stood way over yonder with the strobe.

Sure, it'd be nice if the light was a little softer, but nothing went in the lake. I'm happy.
Some of the local kids - we've got Matt, Claire and Jon here - were happy to indulge me for a moment as I dropped the camera on the tripod and stood way over yonder with the strobe.

Sure, it'd be nice if the light was a little softer, but nothing went in the lake. I'm happy.

This guy wanted my attention all the time. All day long. If I turned my camera away from him for five seconds, he was waving and shouting at me. When he came down off the stick for a break, he wanted to chit-chat and check out the images I had shot.

It has been fun to go back through some of my work from Malaysia - fresh eyes and a new perspective and all that. Megan and I are in the midst of a fantasic American Road Trip right now, but I'm already looking ahead to our return to Asia later this year. Sometime in August we're going to leave for Bangkok, make base camp, visit a few new places and stop in on some old favorites. We're tentatively scheduled to see Mongolia, South Western China, Northern Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Hong Kong and South Korea. I really can't wait; I'm looking forward to slogging through soggy rice paddies, exploring rat infested markets and spending some quality time with the ocean - just like this. It'll be hard to have as much fun as we did on the Perhentian islands, but I think we'll give it a shot.

I'm inspired by quite a few photographers - including many of my friends here on flickr. Whenever I see something that I like, I do my best to put a little Flash spin on it. While traveling last year I was turned onto the incredible landscape work of Craig Potton and Adris Apse; I wouldn't say this is anything like the work they do, but some of my sensibilities have been informed by their work.

There's a whole lot of filter stacking going on here. Allow me to explain.

Geek:
CP-L to flatten reflections on the water and the rocks
Graduated ND8 to bring down the bright sky
Graduated Tobacco Filter to give the sun a hand
ND1000 to smooth out the water

While you’re here, stop by and visit the world of Jahrensy, my trusty second shooter and partner in crime on this, that and another misadventure.
What a lonely boulder. A lonely boulder, indeed.
I haven't met a boulder yet that I didn't want to climb onto and shoot from. While not a huge boulder by any stretch of the imagination, falling off this one would have been more uncomfortable than falling off most others. That water was freezing, I tell you.

Maya Bay, Ko Phi Phi, Thailand.

The most beautiful place I've been in my life.
Even in the middle of the night... or close to it.

I did some midnight swimming on Maya Bay - as is customary when I've had four too many buckets of rum to drink - but I didn't drown. By all accounts I should have, probably would have, if 20 other people weren't swimming in the bay at the same time.

Why I didn't spend a week here, I will never know...

Bo Phut, Ko Samui, Thailand.

I wanted my own iconic palm tree photo... but by the time I started paying attention to the landscape and had forsaken all beer... the weather turned on me.

I did what I could on Samui while battling my malady, but the weather was brutal and I was curled up in bed crying myself to sleep for two days. I got one chance, when the storm broke for about an hour, and went about working.

I wanted a soft, windswept feel to this image so I exposed ever so long. I also tossed a little light from my flash into the leaves to bring the detail out because I was using a filter (and dodging and burning later sucks).

And, of course... a little Epic Sunshine! for the senses.

Flashes:
SB-28, bare, popped into the tree

Ko Phi Phi Don, Thailand.

The cold has returned to Korea just when we thought spring was upon us. So I'm returning to the beach... in a way.

I spent most of a morning trying to make these frames. At the time there was nothing simple about it, but it was fun to experiment with the ND1000 filter... even if I did drop it into the water a half dozen times.

Flashes:
SB-28, bare, popped into the foreground boulder
* triggered manually

Southern Shores, Coastal Highway 706, Mui Ne, Vietnam.

Long exposure fun with the B&W ND1000 filter.

It took me a while to get the hang of this thing - it's a pain to compose a photo, do a blind test without the filter on, strap it on then test everything again - but by the end of the trip I was hunting down water to make these frames. Sadly, most of the excellent coastal areas had already passed us by.

If you're going to do this, remember to support your tripod legs on something wide and flat or you're going to sink into the sand. I lost what I thought should have been about a dozen of my best frames before this. I learned my lesson, though; I never go anywhere without a bag full of Styrofoam garbage anymore.

There's nothing all that exciting about a jetski (unless you've never seen one, I suppose...). But a ghost jetski? That's another matter.

Another long exposure at sunset that just about turned the water into a skeet of ice. I'm still fine-tuning my method here, but I think it's coming along.

I spent a lot of time stocking up on photography books and magazines at Chapters while I was home. I mean, sure, I can get a plethora of stuff here in Korea... but it's in Korean.

One of the magazines I picked up is called Silvershots, filled with fine art BW photography, and I was instantly drawn to the medium-format long exposure shots featured in one of the big spreads. My new mission? Make some of these photos. Then get some of these photos in the magazine.

This is a scene from out on the end of the "Government Dock" (hopefully not the Russian one) about 15 minutes from where I grew up. There are often a dozen or more fishermen casting their lines into the water at any given time, rain or shine. I went down to do some strobist work with anyone who would let me shoot them, but got lucky with a nice sunset, so I started au naturel.

Oh, funny thing about being down on the dock; there are often a few foreign vacationers/cottagers hanging about, and this night was no exception. Most of them were wondering what I was doing, but the first to speak up was an older Korean couple who moved to Canada about 10 years ago. When I started speaking to them in Korean the rest of the Canadians looked at me like I was a lunatic. I don't fit in anywhere anymore.

** Have a peek at my map. You can get a feeling for how spectacular the view is in the right light, looking west at night into the bay.
