This place is about 20min. from our home. It's beautiful and windy, so it's one of our favorite KAP targets - as you might have guessed from the many other pictures in our photostream. I've used many compact digital cameras before, and the N8 can produce photos as good as (and in many cases, much better than) the ones I used before. It's really incredible to say that about a mobile phone! But don't take my word for this, compare the results yourself and let me know your opinion by leaving your comments in the pictures of this set.

Este local maravilhoso fica a 20min. de nossa casa. Como lá venta muito, é um dos nossos alvos favoritos para KAP - e quem já viu nosso photostream sabe disso. Já usei várias câmeras digitais compactas e posso dizer que o N8 faz fotos com qualidade tão boa quanto (ou, em muitos casos, bem melhor do que) as que usei antes. É incrível que um celular consiga tal proeza! Mas não precisa acreditar em mim, compare os resultados você mesmo e me diga sua opinião deixando comentários nas fotos deste álbum.

In the middle of the image is the "Insano" (or "Insane", in English). It's a 41m high water slide (the largest in the world, or so they say) that you slide down in about 4-5s, reaching 105km/h.

No centro da foto está o "Insano". Neste tobogã de 41m de altura (segundo o que dizem, é o maior do mundo) você pode alcançar a velocidade de 105km/h, completando o percurso do topo ao nível do chão em 4s ou 5s.

KAP with Nokia N8 - 01 - Life's a Beach!

I took these series of pictures to test my new Fly'N8 KAP system. Here's how it works:

1 - Get yourself two Nokia N8 mobile phones
2 - Get also some KAP (Kite Aerial Photography) equipment, like a large kite and a rig with motors to pan/tilt your phone
3 - Launch the kite, attach the rig to the line and put the phone in the rig
4 - Let it fly!
5 - With the Fly'N8 software, your airborne N8 will send live video to the N8 in your hands
6 - Just by tilting the N8 in your hands, you'll be tilting/panning the airborne N8 and be able to compose your picture. Press the shutter button and the airborne N8 will take a photo!

Estas fotos foram tiradas para testar meu novo sistema de KAP (Kite Aerial Photography, ou fotografia aérea com pipa) chamado Fly'N8. Para usá-lo, siga estes passos:

1 - Adquira dois aparelhos celulares Nokia N8
2 - Consiga também o equipamento de KAP necessário, como uma pipa grande e um berço com motores para inclinar / rotacionar o celular
3 - Solte a pipa, prenda o berço à linha e coloque o celular no berço
4 - Dê linha e deixe a pipa voar!
5 - Com o programa Fly'N8, o N8 na pipa transmite vídeo "ao vivo" para o N8 em suas mãos
6 - Incline o N8 em suas mãos para inclinar e rotacionar o N8 na pipa e assim fazer a composição que quiser. Agora basta apertar um botão para que o N8 da pipa tire uma foto!

This is just a cropped version of the previous picture. It goes to show that having many pixels allows you more room to crop and (re)compose your image. This is specially important with KAP, since your camera is always moving and a tight framing might cut off something / someone important. With the N8's 12MP camera, you can make a reasonable crop and still have a picture with a good amount of information.

Este é um recorte da imagem anterior. Uma das vantagens de uma imagem de alta resolução é poder fazer recortes para "recompor" uma foto. Isto é especialmente importante para fotos feitas com pipa, pois a câmera está sempre balançando e com isso ela pode tirar algo ou alguém do enquadramento. Contando com uma câmera de 12MP, o N8 permite fazer um recorte razoável e ainda manter uma quantidade significativa de informação na imagem.

It seems there are always other kites dotting the sky around here. Great weather and nice winds attracts many kitesurfers and kitesurfing competitions to this beach and others in the region.

Sempre existem outras pipas colorindo o céu por aqui. Tempo bom e ventos favoráveis atraem tanto praticantes quanto competições de kitesurf para esta praia e outras da região.

This giant bucket of water supposedly holds 1,800L of water and, every 5 min. or so, it is poured over the people down there. See it in action in the next picture.

Inside the Push "Iglu" at Nokia World 2010.

You can attach this equipment to the line of a kite and take aerial pictures. The two motors can tilt and pan the phone to point to any direction you want. They are activated by another phone (which also shows you what the flying phone is seeing), just by tilting it. It's a very simple and intuitive interface.

Meu sistema de KAP (Kite Aerial Photography, ou Fotografia Aérea com Pipa) para o Nokia N900 - agora funcionando com o Nokia N8.

Este equipamento é preso à linha de uma pipa para fazer fotos aéreas. Dois motores permitem inclinar e rotacionar a câmera para que ela aponte para onde quiser. Eles são controlados por outro celular (que exibe na tela o que o celular na pipa está vendo) de modo fácil e intuitivo: basta inclinar o aparelho que os motores tentarão obter a mesma inclinação com o celular na pipa.

My KAP (Kite Aerial System) for the Nokia N8 (and probably other Symbian devices).

A rig is suspended on the line of a kite, and it holds an N8 phone (with a 12MP camera sensor). This phone can send live video to another N8 on the ground, which in turn controls the direction of the camera with accelerometers (you just tilt your phone to change the camera orientation).

Now, for some technical details of this test with my Fly'N8 system:

- no pictures in this set were edited in any way, except for the addition of the watermarks (and a crop in one picture)
- the test lasted about 2 hours
- the phones used a bit less than half of the batteries charge
- 91 pictures were "manually" taken
- about 26 had some motion blur (due to kite/rig movement)
- more than 20 were "keepers" (sharp, good framing, exposure, etc.)
- the rest were taken just for specific tests, or had a framing not as good as the "keepers"
- the video feedback was very good for a range up to 150m, and after
that it would stop working sometimes (but I could still control the
camera orientation and shoot pictures)
- the N8s I used were both pre-production models with pre-release firmwares, so I guess the final version might even provide a slightly better overall performance
- I could have used, but this time didn't use the integrated GPS to geotag the images - I did it manually

Alguns detalhes técnicos do teste realizado com meu sistema Fly'N8:

- exceto pela adição das marcas d'água, as fotos deste álbum não sofreram nenhum tipo de alteração (com exceção de uma que foi recortada)
- a duração do teste foi de aprox. 2 horas
- após o término, as baterias ainda mantinham carga pouco acima de 50%
- 91 fotos foram tiradas "manualmente"
- cerca de 26 delas saíram "borradas" (devido a movimentação da pipa e/ou rig)
- mais de 20 ficara "excelentes" (quanto a foco, exposição, enquadramento, etc.)
- o restante eram fotos de teste, ou não estavam com um enquadramento tão bom quanto as que ficaram "excelentes"
- o retorno de vídeo funcionou muito bem até cerca de 150m, apresentando falhas com distâncias maiores (mesmo ainda sendo possível orientar a câmera e tirar fotos)
- os celulares N8 que usei eram modelos "pré-produção" com firmware antigo, portanto é possível que o desempenho do sistema seja ligeiramente melhor com os modelos finais
- eu poderia ter usado, mas desta vez não usei o GPS do celular para adicionar a informação do local onde as fotos foram tiradas - eu adicionei essas informações manualmente, em meu computador
