A few weeks ago I heard this Steller's Jay male calling in the forest near Lily Lake. I ventured into the timber very quietly and was fortunate enough to get close enough for a few shots. I try for many more Jays than I ever get a shot at. I'm just not quiet/patient enough for these guys.

Cottonwoods and aspens glow in the afternoon sun.

I love how the golden leaves enhance the dark, curvy branches in these trees. They become works of art.

Explore 2011 September 30, #218 (highest)

The rut (mating season) has begun in Rocky Mountain National Park and is drawing quite a crowd. They have rangers stationed near all of the popular elk areas to keep people away from the animals. It is much harder to get a good picture then at other times of the year.

I was lucky to catch a few shots of this guy as he left the main group. The sunlight was very strong and yellow as evening began.

It is so interesting to watch them and listen to them during this time. One bull we saw had a harem of 30+ cows. Needless to say, he had an impressive rack :-)
