Spent the weekend buying and installing a new computer. Not how I like to spend my free time. So frustrating when you don't understand all the technology. But did get the chance to get out and enjoy the Town Fair and Balloon Festival in Erie, Colorado . . . up, up and away!!

366 steps I climbed in this claustrophic tower of the Belfort that is in the center of town. The views were worth every step of the climb!

The 2,000 year old city of Utrecht lies about 26 miles southeast of Amsterdam. It's a charming little city with tree-lined canals and a medieval quarter.

The Graslei and Korenlei are departure points for canal trips. The two quays are lined with the step-gabled guildhouses of merchants and tradesmen that date back to the 12th century.

A feature of the Low Countries, these communities were founded in the 13th century as sanctuaries for the many women (beguines) left single or widowed by the Crusades. Although deeply pious, a beguinage or begijnhof was not a convent, the beguines could leave to marry.

The begijns were religious women who accepted vows of chastity and obedience but drew the line at poverty, preferring to earn a living by looking after the sick and making lace. They provided an option for women to live without a husband and children without becoming a nun -- there was little way of alternative at that time.
