Roll On Columbia

Lhtnup posted a photo:

A rain squall curtains the Columbia River at about the point where it transitions from perhaps a quarter mile wide to a three-mile plus expanse as it flows past Astoria, Oregon. This view looks east (upriver) with the state of Washington on the left, and Oregon on the right. Astoria is camera right, directly across the river.

The water you see here has flowed more than 1,200 miles from the river's origin in British Columbia. It has only 14 more to go before reaching the Pacific Ocean.

The Columbia is fascinating for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its geologic history. It is unfathonable to me to try and concieve of the emptying of Lake Bonneville through this channel when the dam holding water that covered much of the state of Utah was breeched. Though the Bonneville Flood was probably the largest single event, it was just one of the many megafloods that coursed down the Columbia at the end of the last ice age. The numerous other megafloods eventually drained Lake Missoula. All that took place only some 13 - 15,000 years ago which, in geologic time, was yesterday.

The river has inspired numerous artists of all varieties including one of my favorite balladeers, the great Woody Guthrie, whose tribute to the Columbia title's this photo.

The Columbia River Gorge, 120 miles upstream from here, is one of the most beautiful places in all of the US. I've posted a few photos of the Gorge in the Comments section below.

A profoundly insightful place name.

Located directly across the Columbia River from Astoria, Oregon, this place lived up to its name while my daughter, her beau, and I were there. Miserable cold wet bluster made its way inside our jackets and found our bones. But although it did not deter us from taking photographs, I assure you we neither tarried nor spread a blanket for our picnic.

The Pacific Ocean is 14 miles further west yet the incoming tide caused rip currents that were readily visible in the river. To stand and watch that incredible power stirred both fright and awe.

This view is looking upriver at about a 45 degree angle toward mountains along the Oregon bank.

Two of six bulk carriers riding at anchor in the Columbia River. They are facing downriver yet riding upstream on taught anchors due to the in-coming tide and the strong wind blowing up the channel.

The one on the left is the Goliath; I couldn't make out the name on the other. My guess is that they and the other four were waiting for birth space in Portland, some 90 miles upriver.

The State of Washington can be seen across the river through the rain clouds. I don't know exactly how wide the Columbia is at this point, but the Astoria-Megler bridge that crosses it is just over four miles long with little overlap at either end. From here, the river flows another 14 miles to the Pacific Ocean.

The Mighty Columbia is a most impressive waterway.

I took this while on a photo outing with my daughter and her beau. We were inundated with rain most of the day so we jumped out for photos between squalls and when the rain was light.
