Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Though the disastrous earthquake of Sept., 1923, followed by tidal wave and fire practically destroyed Japan's great and beautiful capital, causing a property loss of $2,741,000,000, Tokyo is being rapidly rebuilt into one of the finest of modern cities. In the new city, residential districts are segregated from commercial and industrial districts. Six new avenues from 100 feet to 150 feet wide cut across the most crowded sections supplementing the old main thoroughfares, while more than one hundred new streets with a minimum width of 36 feet, replace the old narrow crooked lanes and streets. Fire-proof zones have been planned and the government is subsidizing the erection of fire-proof buildings.

Tokyo proper has a population of 2,036,000 while Greater Tokyo, following the plan of consolidating former suburbs, announced its population in August, 1925, as 3,859,674."
Spinning Cotton

OSU Special Collections & Archives : Commons posted a photo:

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Cotton is not a native plant in Japan either. It is said that by chance some seeds were brought from India in the year 799 A.D. and being planted they grew well. Then the people learned, from the Chinese, again, how to clean, spin, and weave and thus another useful fabric was added to their wardrobes. the cotton spinning and weaving industries area now very important occupations in Japan. However, the native supply of the raw material is nothing like sufficient; therefore great quantities are brought from abroad, China, India, Egypt, and even the United States. But the Quantity of yarn and cloth produced is greater than is needed at home; consequently exporting these goods to the continent of Asia is one of Japan's most profitable trades.

Japan's cotton mills increased nearly 300 percent during the world war. The earthquake of 1923 gave the industry a set back but it has practically recovered from that and is today using nearly two million bales of cotton annually, three-tenths of which was shipped from America. In 1924 Japan exported manufactured cotton good to the amount of 150 million dollars."
Geisha Giving Entertainment

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "The geisha houses, rather humble, certainly unpretentious abodes, group themselves in certain quarters, and the hiring of the girls is done methodically through a central office. The hiring should be accomplished by the restaurant keeper or by the housewife as early in the afternoon as possible, but not after six in the evening, unless absolutely unavoidable. For the preparation of the Geisha is an elaborate affair from the wonderful coiling and adorning of her hair to the fit of her white, heelless shoes. They are taken in rickishas to the house of entertainment and carried home in the same way when all is over.

The ordinary examples of the fine arts that one meets in the homes of Japan are the pictorial scroll or Kakemono with a picture above three feet long and half the width that hangs in the place of honor--in a recess called the tokonoma, and possibly a bronze or pottery statuette standing in a low pedestal in the same recess. A fine vase of metal or else a wonderfully decorated sword often takes the place of the statuette. Whatever it may be, it is there to be judged on its merits free of all competition with others of its kind, for the good lady of the house, though she owns ever so many pictured scrolls or statuettes or vases, will only exhibit on of a kind at a time. No walls hung with scores of pictures or shelves, or an array of pedestals about the rooms, enter in other scheme of domestic decoration in Japan, In some of the of the wealthiest homes, particularly those of noblemen who have traveled abroad, a "Western parlor" may be found furnished sumptuously in European style, and on whose walls hangs oil paintings in gold frames bought in the course of residence in European capitals."

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "No such national furore for education has ever been seen elsewhere as that which has gripped the mind of Japan. Japan proper had a population of 59,138,900 as reported October 1, 1924. At the same time her school enrollment from kindergarten through the university was given as 8,221,615. Over a million and a quarter complete the elementary school work each year. There are sixteen colleges and universities, five being imperial universities. The largest of these -- Tokyo Imperial University-- had a student body of 5,283 and 414 faculty members in the autumn of 1924."

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "This consists of a hammock swung from a bamboo pole that rests on the shoulders of the bearers. Observe the platform on top for baggage. This method of carrying is used in particular on roads too steep for rickishas. The kago or palanquin is the oldest style of carriage in Japan.

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "A Japanese picture is not painted simply for the sake of representative effect; it is part of a decorative scheme. A Japanese never shows more than one picture or one set of pictures at a time. If he has a large collection, he keeps them in his fireproof storeroom, and gives to each in turn a temporary place in the alcove recess. As it hangs there the eye must find equal pleasure in regarding it from every part of the room."
Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Tea service is a solemn rite, time-honored and royal. It is the test of elegance, of quiet dignity and repose. Gentle courtesy and exquisitely compliment are implied in the decorum of the elaborate tea service, which was amplified and emphasized by the old emperors. Incidentally, drinking is no silent art among the Japanese, and noisy swallowing is perfectly consistent with propriety."
