Macr1 posted a photo:

OPENING OF ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, AT THE BURRA.
To meet the requirements of the scattered population of the Burra, an agricultural district a few miles south of Queanbeyan, the Rev. A. D. Soares, the minister of the Church of England at Queanbeyan, has for some few months past been engaged in the provision of suitable church accommodation. The result is the erection of a neat and extremely snug looking little sanctuary, capable of accommodating a congregation of about sixty persons, and possessing all the conveniences for worship and the administration of all other rites according to the formula of the particular denomination for whose use it is intended. The structure was so far completed as to allow of embracing the opportunity of the late Episcopal visitation for its opening by the bishop. Accordingly, on Monday last, the day appointed for this interesting event, a host of persons went out from town, and these, joined by numbers from the neighbourhood of the church, made up a company so great that not much more than one-half of them could find accommodation in the sacred building. The locality where the church stands is on the roadside, about eight miles from town on the mail line of thoroughfare to the Monaro districts, and on a portion of a Glebe of 200 acres, the gift of Charles Campbell, Esq., of Sydney, to the Church of England. We have above spoken of the church as to its capabilities and conveniences. It remains for us to mention that the structure is of stone, with open roof, and stained glass lights. Over the chancel arch are inscribed the words "I am the Way, the Truth, and the 'Life." And on either side of the chancel is a tablet which contain the Ten Commandments. And certainly, when enclosed with a proper fence, and otherwise completed in its surroundings, the Burra church will be an interesting and picturesque object to the traveller, suggesting how in like manner, were the whole colony equally zealous, churches might spring up in all other centres of rural population, to provide for the spiritual requirements of the land. Like most of the churches recently erected or being erected in the diocese, St Paul's at the Burra is designed by the Rev A.D. Soares on whom the bishop has conferred the title of Diocesan Architect. Just before noon, the hour fixed for divine service, the ringing of a small bell called the congregation together, as many as possible of whom crowded into the church while the rest thronged the door. At the conclusion of the second ringing of the bell, the Rev. A. D. Soares took his place in the reading desk, and bishop a seat in the chancel. The prayers being ended, the right reverend prelate took his place in the pulpit, and announced as his text 1 Peter ii., 4, 5. After a statement to the effect that the formal consecration of the building could not take place until the debt was paid off and the ground conveyed that for a similar reason the church at Bungendore could not yet be consecrated; the bishop said that the church was meanwhile to be merely opened for public worship. The right rev. preacher then gave a brief but lucid exposition of the passage which formed his text, and urged his hearers to seek to become those spiritual stones of which the true church was composed. He gave two apposite illustrations of the teachings of the text in the recent destruction of the churches at Deniliquin and Gunning. The conclusion of the discourse was an exhortation to all present to assist in defraying the cost of the building in which they were then assembled. The discourse, which was every way worthy of the eminent preacher who delivered it, and so appropriate to the occasion, was listened to with devout attention, and was calculated to be of great good to all who heard it. Immediately after the sermon a confirmation service was held, four candidates being presented. The bishop explained to them the nature of the obligations they were about to take upon themselves, and before laying hands on them called on all present to join him in silent prayer for which time was allowed on their behalf. The reading of the offertory service during which a collection on behalf of the building fund was made and which, including a cheque for five pounds deposited in the plate by the Hon. John Campbell, M.L.C., and another for ten pounds deposited by the bishop, amounted to £21/3/9, concluded the devotional part of the proceedings. In a large shed at the rear of the church, and which is ultimately designed for the accommodation of the horses and vehicles of those who attend public worship, a capital luncheon was spread. Here all repaired, not only to appease an appetite sharpened by a long ride and a moderate fast, but to shelter themselves from a pelting rain which had just begun to descend. On the party being joined by the bishop grace was sung, and all fell to vigorously demolishing the substantial fare, which, in the shape of roast pig, turkey, fowl, ham, tongue, etc., etc., etc., with an accompaniment of tea and coffee, was displayed in profusion. Acceptable as the teeming shower was just then for agricultural purposes, and thankful as all were to see it, it was anything but propitious to the party assembled at the Burra church. The drifting rain and raw, bleak wind, and the gathering up of dark threatening clouds, had the effect of making many get ready for a homeward journey, before they had done justice to the cravings of hunger; and carriages and saddle horses were being prepared for the departure of those who were most anxious to be off. In the midst of the repast the bishop himself, through Mr Soares, intimated his desire to leave, and expressed a wish to say a few parting words. The right reverend prelate then stood at the head of the table- and congratulated the company on the event which had called them together. That was the eighteenth church which had been opened in the diocese since its formation about four years ago, and it was the smallest. Many of these churches were built from designs furnished by his dear friend and their esteemed minister Mr Soares. He (the bishop) then spoke in complimentary terms of the labours and services of Mr Soares who held many honorary offices; but these, they knew, would not supply his wants. He held the office of Diocesan Architect; every body applied to him for plans of churches, but nobody thought of paying him for these important services. He hoped there would he an end of this, and that Mr Soares's services would be properly recognised. He (Mr Soares) did not keep his best designs for himself either, but supplied them to others. The new church now building at Cooma was from his plans, and when finished would be one of the handsomest churches in colony. The bishop then spoke of the want of church accommodation in other parts of the diocese, and again urged upon his hearers the duty of giving to the support of the Church Society. He instanced several cases of self-denying giving in the old country, and how christians were be ginning to recognise.and not upon the old Jewish principle-no longer binding, as in their case-of giving one-tenth of their clear in come to the support of religion, and another tenth to the cause of charity. The bishop, in urging upon those present the practice of self denial, recommended them to abandon the habits of smoking and nobblerising. After a few other observations, he said he could not conclude without making mention of the generosity of the Campbell family in their support of the church. It was. pleasing. to see those who were blest with wealth thus acting. Two members of the Campbell family were present, and he was sure the company would like to hear a word or two from one of them. He therefore had much pleasure in calling up on Mr Charles Campbell,. Chanceller of the Diocese, to address them. Mr C. Campbell said he should not think of detaining them long from roast turkey and pig to listen to him He was pleased with what he had witnessed that day. A little time ago he would as soon have thought of realizing one of the tales in the Arabian Nights as of seeing this church where it stood. He approved of the liberality enjoined by the bishop but wouldn't be so unreasonable as to ask them never to taste a nobbler or smoke a pipe of tobacco. All he asked was for them to give up one nobbler a week, and devote the price of it to the Church Society. If every one did this there would then be sufficient funds to meet their requirements. At the conclusion of Mr Campbell's speech the bishop rose and, observing that the members of the Church of England were a loyal people, proposed three cheers for the Queen. These were followed by three more for Bishop and Mrs Thomas, and another for Mr Soares. The bishop then took his departure in a carriage, accompanied by the Hon. John and Mr Charles Campbell. By this time, also, a great number of persons had left, the rain still continuing to descend. Whilst others were finishing their repast, it being found impracticable to have a a formal public meeting, The Rev A. D. Soares gave an account of the rise and progress of the congregation and church at the Burra. The congregation owed its existence to his brother's (Mr G. Soares) exertions, who in his visits to a sick person be un to be concerned for the spiritual destitution of the people, and commenced to hold public worship in their houses. On his brothers departure from the district, he (the speaker) saw his own way providentially open to continue these services. He then saw that in order to keep the congregation together it was necessary to build this church which, like that at Queanbeyan, was a work of faith. He had great pleasure in acknowledging the aid he had received from others in the work. All the bricks in the building (about 2000) were given by a brick maker in Queanbeyan. 500 feet of timber was given by another person in Queanbeyan. To Mr and Mrs James Gibbs he was greatly indebted for extensive help, as well as to other residents in the neighbourhood. Notwithstanding all that had been done there was still a debt of about £100 on the building when they met that morning. The collection already made, together with £25 which the bishop had obtained as a grant in aid, had reduced the debt by £46/3/9.." But still, against the fencing in of the ground and other outside works were accomplished, it might still be said that £100 was wanting, and he should not slack his exertions until that sum was raised. A small additional sum was then raised by a collection made among those who were present, most persons having gone to make preparations for departure; and then the proceedings terminated.
