I've been away for a while now, but slowly making my way back. Many things have been going on!
This snow arrived shortly after Christmas and has been hanging around ever since. This was one of many beautiful, tranquil walks through the snowy woods of southeastern Ohio.

This is a Yashica Electro 35 GSN rangefinder camera that was a gift to me from a friend. According to him, his brother bought it somewhere in the Pacific when he was in the military. There were several models of the Electro 35, and this one was sold from 1971 to 1977. It's in excellent shape and still has the leatherette case. See the comments for more detail shots. It's a very pretty little camera, very nicely made. I've never used it because the batteries are no longer made. I've read in several places on the internet that you can use a different kind of battery that requires a few modifications to make it work. I'm not sure I'm ready to do that!

I only allow myself to buy these once a year - at Christmastime. I usually prefer salty snacks, but there's just something about chocolate kisses that is irresistible.

Spotted this display of old chemistry lab equipment at a local antique shop. It amazes me that these beakers have stood the test of time considering how thin the glass is and how fragile they are.

100 Pictures ~ #81 ~ Gate ~ I have never seen a pasture gate like this and I actually walked by it a couple of times before I realized what it was and how it works. Apparently these are fairly common in the United Kingdom. It's called a "kissing gate" and a person steps into the open part, and pushes the whole thing to the other side and then can step out. There's no need for a latch or to remember to close it and large animals cannot go through it. Even smaller animals would only get through by sheer luck and the ability to push the entire wooden gate. Obviously, you'd need another gate for the animals, but for humans, especially children, this is a clever solution to opening and closing a big gate.

There's a few explanations floating around the internet about why it's called a "kissing gate", but my favorite is this: "A common urban legend is that the name comes from a traditional game played when more than one person is passing through a kissing gate. In order for one person to pass fully through the gate, they have to close it to the next person. At this point, when the two are on either side of the gate, the person in front "refuses" entry to the second person until presented with a kiss. Indeed in some circles it is considered good form for everyone passing through a kissing gate to exchange kisses in this way (provided all parties are sufficiently friendly with each other).

This was taken at the Slate Run Living Historical Farm in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

This was a blacksmith demonstrating his craft at a festival. They were making tools and selling them almost as fast as they could make them.

I'm finishing up my 100 Pictures project, getting the last ones processed and posted.

This is the shuttered Whipple's Dairy Twist located in Ashley, Ohio. This has since been painted over and I don't know if the neon sign is still there or not.

An empty staircase. Every time I have visited this place, I have been with the person who introduced me to it, and every time we have come, I have taken a photo of them in this exact spot, standing on that landing halfway down the steps. Now our lives have gone in different directions and it's more than these steps that are empty. It seemed strange being there alone, but not half as strange as this photo seems to me, because all I see is what's not there.....

Diptychs aren't my usual style, but I set off on a cloudy Sunday afternoon to try and finish up my 100 Pictures project and I knew I wanted to get the set of doors on the right, but after finding the ones on the left, I couldn't decide which to use.

The doors on the right are at the fire station located in the heart of Upper Arlington, Ohio. I've always loved these gold doors. The rest of the edifice is ordinary bricks and mortar, but they seemed to want to make a statement somewhere, so they chose these doors. This was originally the city's municipal building, which you can still see the ghost of the letters above the address.

The doors on the left are located at the Ohio Supreme Court building in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Amazingly enough, they are not visible from the street, you have to step into a covered portico and then there two identical sets of these beautiful ornate doors on either side of it, facing each other. I never knew they were there until I just happened to wander up there on this day.

Sunday afternoon drives on a gorgeous summer day, getting lost on a meandering road through the country forest with no destination, completely unplugged from the world....yes, definitely my favorite thing.
Taken in Tar Hollow State Forest in the Hocking Hills, one of my favorite places.

Out on a crisp late afternoon with my camera. This was taken on the intramural fields at The Ohio State University. There's no better place to be in the autumn than on a college campus. (thanks for the inspiration Baggers!)
