I met Jody searching for great horned owl babies a few years ago. This year she became a docent for Hawkwatch International and has befriended an owl nicknamed Katorre. They are in love.

Scipio, Utah--named after a young lawyer who settled this place--Scipio Africanus (name of Roman general who defeated Hannibal) Kenner (explored--thank you #385).

Scipio, Utah is near dead center Utah, a pioneer settlement and a pit stop on the way to Capitol Reef National Park. It has a gas station and a fast food restaurant and some funky barns. It isn't the Central Coast of California, but it is pretty in its own way if you aren't in a hurry. Lots of places like this in Utah. As a 5th generation descendant of Mormon pioneers I should pay more attention to my heritage as I reject the politics of the place.

Linda took us here. She has taken us many beautiful off the beaten path places. We went over the bridge on the Pacific Plate to reach the North American Plate. Another beautiful California small town (pop 18). The saloon operator had been a long time teacher in the local one room school house. A long way to a grocery store.

These two week old colts were playing. There is nothing softer than the muzzle of a baby horse. Cal Poly horse barns are full of youngsters and more are coming.

We were wandering about the coast in soft gray light. We wandered to Sweet Springs Preserve in Los Osos where I focused in the far distance towards a sled of snowy egrets--too far. Judy sighed and walked back to the car to read and I promised to join her and then heard a noise behind me. A bird (great egret) posed--filled my lens. I underexposed and loved this bird and worried about Judy. Then wandered back. Black is kind of cool.

It wasn't that funny, was it?

What do I know. I just know I have been trying to get a photo with something that shows their personality for years. It seems the light is too contrasty, they're too far away, they're sleeping, they're rolling around too fast. Oh well, They are gorgeous animals and so hard to shoot. Sometimes it is best to leave the camera in the car and just watch and listen and enjoy their apparent joy and silliness.. Enhydra lutris.

If you can find it on a map--hey you are on an adventure. Linda took us there. She takes us so many places. This man did not want his photo taken but then he warmed to us. He lives in a place that takes a lot of gas to get to the nearest grocery story. Check it out. His brother showed us the motorcycle he built from vintage cars. Wooden wheels and everything just from old cars and spare parts. He and his wife and his brother are the high spots and lights of Bradley, California. Strange and wonderful place. I guess I liked his wrinkles that tell a story of life lived.

A cowboy who has lived a good life teaching young people and working for folks with grater resources. But it doesn't seem to matter to Ray. I don't know. I just met him and made some immediate judgments. I told him the light in his eyes told a story since the light appeared in the shade. There are people you meet and know they are good. Ray is one of them. But I don't think he knows it.

We ate lunch at Shine Restaurant in Morro Bay. It is a vegan restaurant with tasty food--lots of kale--the most nutrient rich veg. I took my camera this time because of the interesting characters that often appear. I thought I was being cheeky as I approached this man who called himself Morgan--Pyrat Morgan to be exact. I said I am shooting the characters of the Central Coast. He said--what a great way to meet people. I was stunned. I thought I was invading his privacy. Handsome man with blonde dreadlocks who lives on a sail boat in the Bay and says he is a human rights and internet activist. On his way to Iceland.

I am a little frustrated with Nikon these days and wanted to share my experience. I bought my nifty full frame D600 back in September. I have returned it four times because of a persistent dirty sensor. Nikon kindly replaced the camera after the first repair failed to clean the sensor. This is the second camera's sensor after the second repair. Just saying if you are considering this camera--do a little research. Nikon has refused to give me my money back. Not a happy Nikon customer at the moment. Image of sky and taken through Color Efex Pro to emphasize dust and spots. Howard, if Nikon can't clean my camera, I'm not going to try.

This is the place where I walk the dog. It is another part of the world that is gorgeous. But on this occasion it was sad.... I believe Jim Sheridan (screenwriter and actor) lived or lives in the house that can be seen over looking the Irish Sea.

I was in the Phoenix airport waiting for a flight to San Luis Obispo when I spied this handsome cowboy in a crisp white shirt and black hat. I sat down on the floor next to him and asked if I could take his photo--a little cheeky was I. He complied. Michael is a rodeo rider specializing in cutting cows out of a herd and driving them into a pen. He was traveling to Cayucos to work on a cattle ranch for a few months. Part of my "characters of the central coast" project.
