Hearing Test.

Angela Mary Butler posted a photo:

Monday, January 18th I had to get a hearing test.
The man doing it was best kind. I've had 3 hearing tests since July, and he was the best technician I've had so far. I mean, he was WICKED!
He explained everything to me, he didn't get annoyed when I asked him questions about like everything! He even let me go in his room and let me check out all the equipment. He even offered to take a picture of me sitting in his chair with his headphones and microphone! (The picture he took for me is posted in comments!)

So, the reason why I have to take hearing tests is because when I was on chemotherapy I was on a drug called Cisplatin. One of the side effects is that it can potentially screw up your hearing. So, when I first started taking this in August I had a hearing test before hand, everything was good. Took another hearing test after my first round of chemo including Cisplatin, my hearing declined. During my next round of chemo with Cisplatin my hearing had declined anymore.
I luckily only had two rounds with this drug included.
My results from yesterday is that my hearing has improved since the last time, but I have hearing loss in my left ear. Not enough to need a hearing aid or anything, but they will be keeping an eye on it for the next couple of years. They say they expect my hearing to go back to normal as time goes by! :)

I hate hate hate the focus of this picture but I love this picture because it's with amazing people.
The woman on the left of me is Gale Roberts. She is the head oncology nurse at the janeway, and she's absolutely fantastic. The man to my right, is Dr.Jack Hand. He was my main doctor throughout my treatments. I love him. He's so foolish. The man to the far right is Andrew - or Andy. He's in training, and he's doing great so far. I'm sure he will be an excellent doctor.

They gave me all the results.
The tumor is still there - BUT DON'T WORRY - it's all inactive disease. They told me from the beginning of treatments some of the mass will still be there but it's no biggie whereas it's not going to benefit or hurt me in anyway. Doing surgery would be pointless. Next check up with these guys is in a month, and scans.. see you in 3 months! :)

[024/365]" />

Today I walked into my homeroom, and I was late. My homeroom teacher asked me to come over. I figured I had a detention.. Nope, he called me over to show me that I was on the front page of The Telegram. Here's what it said:

(page A1)
Personal Portraits, by Danette Dooley
~Special to the Telegram
Young cancer patient documents fight against the disease in pictures
Angela Butler has been detailing her journey with cancer through the lens of her camera.
The 17-year old from Mount Pearl was diagnosed with stage 3B of Hodgkin's lymphoma in May 2009.
"Stage 3B means it's in three areas of your body. I had cancer in my chest, my neck and my armpit," she explains.
Angela had only started feeling sick the month before, and doctors initially believe her symptoms were related to a flu-like respiratory tract infection.
"My chest hurt a major amount," she recalled. "I was coughing so hard I woke myself up and everyone else in the house. I was throwing up all the time. It's the sickest I've ever been."
A chest x-ray in early May revealed an 18.4 centimetre tumour under her rib cage.
Chemotherapy has since shrunk the tumour to the point where it's almost non-existent, Angela says.
"It's still there, but just a tiny bit."
She says she'll need to be without the disease for five years before being considered cancer-free.
Angela remember that while chemo often bought a great deal of pain, it was the though of losing her long black hair that scared her the most initially.
"But seriously, within a couple of days I really didn't care. I mean... I was just diagnosed with cancer and I had all my final exams coming up... losing my hair was the least of my worries," she says.
Angela has been interested in photography for years, so it just seemed natural to reach for the camera as she coped with cancer.
"Taking pictures is what I like to do," she says simply.
A photo of her undergoing a medical procedure at the Janeway is on display at Bowering Park as part of the "Cancer Connections" travelling exhibit.
An initiative of the Canadian Cancer Society and a non-profit collective of photographers called PhotoSensitive, the exhibit features hundreds of Canadians touched by cancer.
Angela's website (www.flickr.com/angelamarybutler) featuring her photography has become an inspiration for other people battling cancer.
"I get messages from people who tell me that hearing my story has helped them through cancer. ... The feedback and comments I'm getting are helping me a lot," she says.

(page A2)
Teen praised for attitute towards the disease...
Angela says, in fact, that many good things have happened to her since she was diagnosed with cancer, including meeting Dean Stairs and his family.
Stairs is a music producer from the west coast who recently recorded two of Angela's songs for an upcoming "Hope" album in support of the Janeway Foundation.
Stairs lost his four-year-old son, Gideon, to cancer in December.
He says becoming friends with Angela has helped him and his family a great deal.
"I find Angela to be an incredibly mature 17-year-old who has faced all the odds against her with a lot of dignity and a great outlook on life," he says. "We're really pleased to have her as part of this project."
Angela says if she had to have cancer, she's glad it happened before she turns 18. Otherwise, she would have been treated at the Health Sciences Centre rather than at the Janeway.
"You'll never meet a staff like the Janeway," she said. "They are a bunch of amazing people. Their job is very hard and I appreciate everything they did for me. I don't think I'll ever be able to thank them."
Being a young person with cancer also means she's getting a wish from the Children's Wish Foundation.
"I'd love to go on a trip and go shopping," she says.
After she graduates from Mount Pearl Senior High in June, she hopes to pursue a career in the arts.
"Something with music or photography, hopefully," she says.
An only child, she is philosophical about her illness and says her positive attitute has helped her family and friends deal with it.
"I've never, ever sat down and cried about it, because I think me getting cancer was bad, but it probably helped me for the better. It's helped a lot of people. It's changed my life."

I did NOT draw this, my beautiful friend Lizzie Carr drew this for me.
I've had this idea in my head for my next tattoo for a long time, and I did little stupid sketches of it before but nothing worth mentioning.

But seriously, isn't this amazing? Lizzie, is crazy!! I love this so much.
All I told her was that I wanted a violet cancer ribbon, being held by two old school birds, with the word "survivor" incorporated somehow, and she did more than an amazing job on this. I can't wait to get this tattooed on my back.
So, I'm hoping to get this done in October, because a tattoo convention is coming here from October 15-17, and Dan Smith from L.A. Ink will be here in Calgary, and if I gave Dan Smith this drawing and just got him to work from that, it would be absolutely amazing, he is such an incredible artist.
Thanks so much Lizzie again for drawing this up!! ♥

Now... my day!!!
I had Fibre 3D this morning, my teacher is really cool. Check her out.
www.lauravickerson.com
that's what I love about ACAD, like every single teacher is an artist, it's amazing.
In class today we didn't do a whole lot.. we introduced ourself, talked about the course, and went over the first assignment. The assignment that is due next week is to make a mini piece of furniture out of cardboard, and then it has to be made for real on a lifesize scale, and be ready to be put on display for September 29th.
I spent the rest of the day at Lizzie's, with Erin, Becky, Tyler, and Robyn.

I absolutely love everything about
- Calgary
- ACAD
- my awesome new friends
- living so close to Tarah!!♥
and just everything I have been doing lately.
Ahhh, happiness is taking me over.

Friday I had to go to the hospital to get another CT Scan.
Considering I was worked up about this since Monday, it went incredibly well. In the past I've had quite a lot of trouble with IV's (27 tries....) so I cried over this for two hours Monday night anticipating this day.
When I got there I requested Byron, who did it last time and got it first try (after other people tried missed about 4 times) and he got it first try. It was such a relief, it didn't even hurt.

It was so nice to go to the janeway today, and just see everybody again.
I seen my 2nd daddy Barry, and he told me he always looks at my pictures. Then I seen Bev and Denise at J4 and they said the exact same thing, and Bev told me I HAVE to go do photography when I'm out of high school. Little things like that make me so happy. I also seen Christine and Gale at Medical Daycare. Today was excellent.

My fourth pulmonary function!

Angela Mary Butler posted a photo:

I went to school for 2 periods today, and then I left at 10:30 because I had an appointment at the janeway for a pulmonary function, a.k.a. breathing test. You've seen pictures of me in this contraption before, but I've never really explained it. You basically sit and put your mouth around the tube and breath differently for 3 or 4 different test. One you just breath normally, then breath in and as much as you can, then blow it out as hard and as long as you can. Another one is when you breath normally, then breath in very deeply, then breath out, then pant. The last one is with the door shut, and you breath normally, then take a deep breath, hold it for 5 seconds, then blow out as hard and as long as you possibly can.

The last test I just told you about is the interesting bit of news I have to tell you about! :)
For the last one, when your breathing in, they actually have gas going through the tubes that you have to breath in. It's not dangerous, and it's not harmful to your body in any way. It just contains nitrogen. The point of it containing nitrogen is to test (when your blowing/breathing out) how much % of the gas you are actually breathing out. So basically, how well your lungs are working, how open the passageways are, etc..
May 3rd, the results were 57%.
June 5th, the results went up to 79%.
November 23rd the results went down to 64%. (At this point I was almost 3 months off chemo. In August they switched my chemotherapy protocol, and I was on a drug called Bleomycin. Apparently one of the side effects of this drug is to alter your breathing, make it harder to breath,etc..)
aaaand my test results for today, January 6th, are up to 93%!!!!! I'm so pleased! :D

Just an update on me in concerns of well, cancer.
I have to go to the hospital once a month for 6 months (so for another 3) and get bloodwork done, and my port flushed. If you don't know what that means the nurse just puts a needle in the port, and injects saline water, and this "flushes" the port. This is my 3rd time back to the janeway to get it flushed, so another 3 more to go, and then I get my power port out. :)
I'm excited to get it out, but at the same time I'm a little nervous. I kinda comfort myself though, thinking about when I first got my power port put in, I went home literally a couple hours after my surgery. So, hopefully the removal goes just as well.

The only other thing I have to do besides this for "post-cancer" is take my Septra pills twice a day every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and take my birth control pills every day to get my ovaries back on the go, which are working! I'm NOT infertile anymore guys. :)

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Angela Butler's photographs speaks volumes.
Since she was diagnosed with stage 3B Hodgkin's lymphoma back in May, Angela, 17, has been using her camera to document her experience with cancer.
"I've always been interested in photography and wherever I go my camera goes with me, and that just didn't change when I got cancer," she says.
Angela, who is from Mount Pearl, has been posting her photographs online to her Flickr account ( www.flickr.com/angelamarybutler ) and has become an inspiration and a hero to others whose lives have been touched by cancer. While she doesn't like really talking about this "because I feel like I'm bragging or something." she says with a laugh, she does admit "it's cool" that people look up to her.
Recently, one of Angela's photographs of her undergoing a gallium scan was chosen to be part of an exhibition called "Cancer Connections" that's touring the country. The exhibit, which stopped at Bowering Park in St.John's for three weeks in October, features around 1,000 black-and-white photographs of Canadians who have been affected by cancer.
These days, Angela is doing just fine. After undergoing several cycles of chemotherapy, her tumour has shrunk so much that it's almost non-existent now. On October 5, she was declared cancer-free, although technically she says, there is still a "small, small, small amount of cancer cells"within her body.
Besides photography, Angela is also passionate about music. A pianist and singer, she is putting her talents toward helping the Janeway Children's Hospital, where she was treated.
After seeing Angela's photographs online, Dean Stairs, a music producer from Lewisporte ( who lost his four-year-old son Gideon to cancer last December ), got Angela to record two songs for his album, Hope. The CD will be released sometime in April 2010, with all profits going towards the Janeway.
After she graduates from Mount Pearl Senior High next June, Angela says she'd like to pursue a career in the arts. She also plans on studying photography, she adds.
"It is something that I would like to keep doing."

I was so happy to finally meet James.
He's the one who invited me to be part of this wonderful project.
The photo I had taken that was chosen for the exhibit is in the middle of me and James. There are also 5 more pictures that he had chosen to be put on his website. I'm also expecting a link within the next few weeks of the interview that he had done with me. :)

A couple of months ago a man named James from Photosensitive's Cancer Connections contacted me and told me and told me he would like to include my photo's on his website, and in the exhibition that has been touring across the country. ( www.photosensitive.com/cc ) This is a wonderful project, everybody should check out the website.

Anyways this is the photo that James chose to put in the exhibition. This picture and 5 more as well are also on the website. :)
What an honor for my photos to be chosen for such a beautiful event. Also, I am the first ever person under 18, to have a self-portrait in this exhibition, I'm also the first ever person under 18 to be interviewed. Yeah, they interviewed me and the video will be on the website in a few weeks - James is letting me know when it's up.
This is what was wrote underneath the picture:
"Angela Butler has been taking photos every day since being diagnosed with stage 3b Hodgkin's lymphoma in May 2009. Several cycles of two different chemotherapy protocols have shrunk her tum our by 86%. Angela says, "There ain't no party like a gallium scan partay!"

This exhibition will be in Bowering Park from today, October 5th - October 25th.
EVERYONE should go check this out, it's truly truly beautiful.

Also, I'm starting "365 Days" today.
This is the best possible day to start it. First day with no pills, no needles, no more chemo.

When I came home from Halifax in July, they gave me the results of my CT Scan and results were that I had a blood clot in the left side of my neck. So, because of that I had to take two needles twice a day everyday for 3-6 months.

For me thankfully, it was only 3.
My stomach is pretty bruised, and feels like a pin cushion basically, but it's all done now. No more stabbing myself twice a day. :D

Take a better look!!

This is every needle I've used from July - October.
Today we disposed of them @ the janeway.

After being injected with the radioactive dye, you get put into a room by yourself with the lights off, and "calming" music (they put on a piano soundtrack or something) for an hour, then they get you up, tell you to pee(they want your bladder to be empty for the scan) then you hop in the scanner basically. The scan itself ranges from 20 minutes to an hour. On Monday, we'll get the results. Also, if you read this read the description on the previous photo. How they "prepare" the needle with radioactivity is crazy.

"Use of Unsealed Nuclear Substances"
The PET scan protocol is a bit more complicated then you may think. Before the scan I have to get an IV and I have to get injected with radioactive dye. This radioactive dye is flown to Halifax from Montreal on the day of my scan. It is then placed in this "safe" per say while they're waiting for me to come.
When they take the needle out of this safe, it isn't your regular needle. First they take out a metal box, they open it with a key, then they take out the needle. The needle itself actually has a huge metal cylinder placed around it where there is so much radioactivity in the vile.
Also, when they're injecting the dye in you they do it behind a metal wall that's on wheels because it's dangerous for them to be around it.

Yesterday I went to the Janeway to get all of my scans done again. First I got my echo done, I couldn't get my EKG done even though there was an appointment..apparently the technician wasn't in? Which I found really weird. Then I had to drink that gross water with contrast/dye for my CT scan. So, that was all done by 11:00, then we had to wait until 2pm to go back to the hospital because I had to get an injection for a gallium scan that was scheduled for Wednesday. When we came back at 2:00, and waited in the room until 3:00, the nurse came out and told us that Dr.Hand didn't want me to have it done until next month... So, we were waiting all that time for nothing. :\ I wasn't too mad, my mother was livid.

This picture is actually so old - it was taken on May 24th actually. I'm only posting it now because previously, I felt too embarrassed to post it.

Anyways, most people know that one of the side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss. After treatment I went weeks with a full head of long black hair. But then, it started to fall out. And when it starts to fall out, it falls out fast.
Like, this picture is the result of me running my fingers through my hair in the shower, seriously. It really is scary.

Since my last round of chemo, I had to get two platelet transfusions. I've been so sick the past few weeks. Throwing up constantly, and spending most of my time in bed.

It's almost over. I went into the hospital today for blood work - and everything was fine. I have to go in the 21st, and 23rd for scans at the janeway, and then I'm off to Halifax on the 29th for my PET scan. The results of these scans will determine whether I have to get radiation or not, but as of right now the doctors are thinking I won't need it, but you never know. Also, that's Dr.Goodyear! She's a hottie, I love her. She called me her second daughter today ♥ ..we kinda look alike don't we? :P

Funny how now, I'm bald and I'm paler than I was before (both good reasons why someone could have a low self-esteem) but now I don't think that way at all! I never insult myself anymore, ever. And the reason why I don't is because I don't feel that way about myself anymore. I guess before I used to have low self-esteem, big time.
Who would of thought? Since I've been diagnosed with cancer, I feel better about myself.
