Gamla Stan from Slussen - Stockholm, Sweden.

Gamla Stan is the old town of Stockholm. The town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.

As well as being home to the Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum, and the Riddarholm church, Gamla stan also boasts Kungliga slottet, Sweden's baroque Royal Palace, built in the 18th century after the previous palace Tre Kronor burned down. The House of Nobility (Riddarhuset) is on the north-western corner of Gamla stan.
Stockholm - Slussen Train Tracks looking out towards Gamla Stan

Slussen Train Station - Stockholm, Sweden.

Slussen which also means "locks" in Swedish, is also the name of its Metro station, named after the nearby locks and added infrastructural network and serves the red and green lines of the Stockholm Metro. There is a bus terminal and a train station from where several local bus lines and Saltsjöbanan depart for the eastern parts of Stockholm and its surroundings.

Slussen has long been held up as an example of ingenious traffic and urban planning as it combines major intersections of the road, bus and underground networks in a relatively small space and even manages to include train and boat connections.

Riksdagshuset and Norrbron - Stockholm, Sweden.

The Riksdag building or the House of Parliament is the seat of the Parliament of Sweden, located on Helgeandsholmen.

This was taken on the first windy night in Stockholm and the river under the North bridge gushed heavily downstream. There was hardly anyone in the streets that night anymore, not even tourists, owing to the bad weather. I set my tripod up on the ledge of a bridge with all tripod legs folded up to try to get more stability. The camera strap, of course, was around my neck as I was afraid the wind was going to send my camera flying off the bridge. I also took my lens hood off as the wind was hitting hard against it. Amazingly enough, I still managed to get a sharp image out of all that. Sheer luck.

The Plattan or "The Slab" of Sergels Torg - Stockholm, Sweden.

Stockholm's most popular square, Sergels Torg is also known for its sunken pedestrian plaza designed with triangular patterns. It is colloquially known as Plattan or "The Slab". From here, there is also a wide flight of stairs leading up to the pedestrian street Drottninggatan, connecting south to Stockholm Old Town and north to Kungsgatan.

Sergels Torg has been much criticized for giving priority to cars at the cost of pedestrians. It has, among some quarters, become the main target for criticism of the much debated demolition of the central city district of Klara during the 1950s and 1960s. Nevertheless, it is not dissimilar to but larger than the public space in front of Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and much like its French counterpart remains the most popular space in Stockholm for meeting friends, for political manifestations, for a wide range of events, and for drug-dealers. This includes the fountain, in which people celebrate every major victory by a Swedish sports team. Next to the square you can find the 37 meter tall glass obelisk made by Edvin Öhrström in 1974.
Stockholm - Reflections of Gamla Stan

View of Gamla Stan from Slussen - Stockholm, Sweden.

Finally, on my third night in Stockholm, the winds have calmed down, and although still overcast, the condtions were slightly better than what it had been. I had not been able to get clear reflections the past couple of days because of the wind and rain, so this was my time to do it.

This is a view of Gamla Stan, the old town, taken during my walk towards the bridge to Södermalm. The old town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.

Stortorget in the old town is the scenic large square and the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath, where Swedish noblemen were massacred by the Danish King Christian II in November, 1520. The following revolt and civil war led to the dissolution of the Kalmar Union and the subsequent election of King Gustav I.

As well as being home to the Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum, and the Riddarholm church, Gamla stan also boasts Kungliga slottet, Sweden's baroque Royal Palace, built in the 18th century after the previous palace Tre Kronor burned down.
Stockholm - Central Bridge Evening Traffic

Centralbon, looking out to Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen from Sodermalm - Stockholm, Sweden.

I hope this image is totally worth the effort because it definitely is a memorable one. I had seen a similar vantage point here on Flickr but it was taken from a hotel room at the Hilton. Since I don't have a hotel room at the Hilton, I had to improvise. I found a spot on the same hill but didn't know it was going to be very dark at night. Getting there, I had a strange encounter with a creepy fellow who was lurking in the shadows. In other words, I felt my safety was a little bit threatened. Oh, the dangers we, as night photographers, have to face ! Who says it's easy being one. Not only do I have to watch my exposure, I also have to constantly watch my back.

Anyway, I had a lower vantage point than what I would have liked. There was an overhang in front of me that partially blocked the view, so I set the tripod up on that overhang, so that it's at least another foot above me. Thanks to my D700's live view, I was able to set up my shot that way through the LCD.

This is the Central Bridge. It carries traffic from the old town in the north to the island of Sodermalm in the south. It is 1,200 metres long and consists of two viaducts passing over Söderström - the southern stream, and Riddarfjärden close to Norrström - the northern stream, with an interjacent elevated section traversing Riddarholm canal and the adjacent eastern waterfront of Riddarholmen. Central Bridge has a capacity of 130,000 cars per day.

Coming out of my hotel after some shelter from the rain, I decided to walk to Sergels Torg, which was only a few steps away. I brought an umbrella but decided that I did not need it after all, the rain was reduced to a mere drizzle and was manageable enough to take photos.

This is a popular spot in Stockholm, the city's commercial area and a great hangout for local folks. Just the previous day, this area was packed with aspiring singers auditioning for the Swedish Idol. This night, however, was more toned down thanks to the bad weather.

Sergels Torg is a public square in Stockholm named after 18th century sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel, whose workshop was once located north of the square. The square includes a fountain where you can also find the 37-meter tall glass obelisk made by Edvin Öhrström in 1974.
Stockholm - A Break from the Rain and View of Gamla Stan

View of Gamla Stan, Riddarholmen and Stadshuset from Slussen Bridge - Stockholm, Sweden.
View On Black

Find me a city that has a lot of water, and my camera and I will be there.

I had no idea that when I thought about that phrase, that the water that awaited me in Stockholm was rain! Lots of rain! I guess I did get what I asked for.

This image was shot during a brief respite from the pouring rain, although it was still not rain-free -- drizzles came and went and attempted to leave spots on my lens. The good thing that comes from rain is that the rain clouds that go with it reflect so much of the city lights and the sky gives this nice evening glow. This is what happened here. This was shot way past twilight but I still got a nice color from my long exposure. It also looks like a fisheye-lens shot, but it isn't -- the natural curve on the bridge and railing gave that look.

There are many advantages shooting in the rain, believe it or not, as long as it's not pouring buckets. I was getting worried during my stay in Stockholm. It was strong winds during my first day, and rain on the second, and overcast skies all throughout. The challenges we have to face as traveling photographers are unspeakable. Weather is your main enemy, and that's a battle you can not win, so you have to work that to our advantage.

This image was taken from the bridge going to the district of Södermalm on the Slussen bridge. Stockholm has 14 islands, and is surrounded by water, particularly Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. It is the first Nordic Country that I've visited, and I guess this was their odd way of welcoming me.

Gilded crown of Skeppsholmsbron with Old Town behind it - Stockholm, Sweden.

'Just got back from Stockholm today, and I couldn't think of a better representation of this beautiful city than this symbol of Swedish monarchy, taken just last night at a gorgeous blue hour. A bit of trivia - there's currently 18 hours of visible daylight in Stockholm. That means it's been a looooong day for me. This shot was taken past 10 p.m.

I have yet to download the rest of my photos but thought I'd start with an image tonight.

Skeppsholmsbron, was the first forging iron bridge to be constructed in Sweden in 1861. In 1935 this bridge on the island of Skeppsholmen was classified as a historical landmark, thus prohibiting replacing the bridge or changing its exterior, a decision nevertheless reassessed in the 1990's.

Sergels Torg - Stockholm, Sweden.

You can definitely count on something good coming from the rain, and those are puddles ! Before this, I had not been able to get any good reflections at the lake at all due to the wind and rain, so coming across this was a nice surprise. I jumped right into the middle of the puddle, which was pretty deep I should say, to get closer to the reflection I wanted. That's the Stadshuset, or the Stockholm City Hall, seen from across a bridge.

Skeppsholmskyrkan and AF Chapman Youth Hostel - Stockholm, Sweden.

Skeppsholmskyrkan is a church on the islet of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, secularized in 2002. Named after its location, the church was built 1823-1849 to replace a minor wooden church on Blasieholmen destroyed in the devastating fire of 1822. Inaugurated by King Charles XIV John and still officially carrying his name, it was designed by the architect Fredrik Blom as a neoclassical cathedral temple inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, borrowing the coffered ceiling while substituting the oculus for the temple-shaped lantern light.

The af Chapman & Skeppsholmen Youth Hostel occupies a three-masted sailing ship that is permanently moored on Skeppsholmen, an island near the city center. The ship, which entered service as the Dunboyne in 1888, once carried passengers between Ireland and Australia. It was a Swedish Navy barracks ship during World War II and has been an STF youth hostel since 1949.
Stockholm - Skeppsholmen Church and Hostel at Night
