"The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime".

On the evening of 3 August 1914, the day before Britain officially declared war on Germany, the british Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, was watching the gas lamps being lit in London.
He knew that war in Europe was now inevitable and he was deeply affected by the failure, including his own as Foreign Secretary, to stop it.
Moreover, he foresaw that such a war would have terrible consequences, far beyond that of the military conflict itself.
And so, as the lamps were being lit in London, he was moved to observe, by way of metaphor, that the light of Europe was being extinguished, and that the coming war would cast a shadow over Europe that would not be lifted in his lifetime.
He died in 1933, a time when the consequences of WWI were leading inexorably to the the rise of the Third Reich and WWII.

From the comment stream on the mono version:
"Thanks all.
To be honest, this was one of those days when I wish I'd had one of my old Canons or Nikons with me, with a 24mm, or a 20mm lens even.
Or at least one of my old 6x9 medium format's with a good Tessar, Skopar or Heliar on it, and a roll of normal film that wasn't going to be x-pro'd.
This sight was really weird.
Normally from that spot on the A470 road you get this incredible view right across Breconshire and into Herefordshire, with the Beacons [mountains] rising up on each side of the valley.
But you'd need a wider aspect to show it off properly.
Underneath that tsunami of cloud is Brecon town itself, and driving down into it, a few minutes after this shot was taken, one drove from blazing sunshine into the densest fog, that felt as though it had just gushed out of a gigantic arctic temperature freezer.
It was amazing, and this photograph, or the other colour x-pro'd version, doesn't come near doing it justice."
