Exeunt: Los Angeles Theater

magnetic lobster posted a photo:

A show lets out at the Los Angeles Theater. The Los Angeles Conservancy's annual Last Remaining Seats movie series hosts movies in some of the old theaters in the downtown Broadway Theater district.

The crowd motion comes from a 10 second exposure. I've combined it with some much shorter exposures taken a few minutes earlier to preserve details in the lights.

This is one of the few instances where I visualized the shot I wanted days beforehand, I was able to take the shot, and the result was about what I expected. That's not how it usually works for me. My normal procedure is to (a) arrive with no idea of what to shoot, (b) come up with a concept for a shot, then discover that the composition I envision is geometrically impossible, dummy, and (c) fail to notice obvious problems when I do shoot. Consequently, the keepers are almost never the ones I expect. (Follow these simple steps and you too can be an Unprofessional Photographer like me!)

Tokina 11-16mm @ 11mm, f/10, ISO 200, exposures from 10 sec to about 1/4 sec.

Looking straight up at the west end of the church at Ensemble Conventuel des Jacobins in Toulouse, France. Two more views in the first comment below.

Unfortunately, I speak enough French to be able to understand the sign that said that tripods weren't allowed. So I had to find places to rest the camera for these long exposures (it's dark in there!). In this case, the camera was lying flat on the floor pointed straight up.
Saints-Michel-et-Gudule Stained Glass #1

magnetic lobster posted a photo:

This is inside Cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule in Brussels, Belgium. You can also see the windows on the other side.

Processing this one took a bit of work because the windows are so much brighter than everything else, and I wanted the inside of the church to be clearly visible but still retain some of the detail in the windows. I ended up doing two separate tonemappings, one for the windows and another for everything else, then merging/blending the results (among other tweaks).

I wish there were a way to stitch together several photographs to get an unobstructed view of all of these windows in the same shot. Basically I want to put the side of the church in a giant flatbed scanner.
