Aiden @ 6400

PVA_1964 posted a photo:

D5200
ISO 6400
In Camera B&W Picture Control

I was asked to build a class on how to make better pictures of kids. So... I pulled out the camera and went to make some new images... My kids are nearly grown and not too "kid" like anymore.

Luckily, I know an amazing family with the cutest kids! This is Aiden. Aiden isn't a stranger to my PhotoStream.

www.flickr.com/photos/pva1964/3930873982/

This was made towards the end of the day as we were winding down. The light was low and I was getting to much blur from the moving kids.

So, I cranked the ISO up to 6400. That solved the blur issue, but left me with some not so attractive noise. I solved that by kicking the Picture COntrol to the B&W setting.

I know I could do it in the computer. But when I am making images, I want to get excited about what is coming up on the screen. So, I try and shoot with the end result... or as close as I can get to it... in camera.

The 80-400mm was set to near it's very minimum focusing distance while zoomed to 400mm. Really, much better than I thought it would do.

My wife said, "That is his 'I see a photo' look"

She was right. Wednesday was a great flower picture day. Light overcast that hid the shadows, but let enough light through to give the flowers a bit of "pop".

I grabbed the newest stuff in my bag (D7100 and 80-400mm G) and made some video. Once doe, I realized that the 105 micro hadn't been out to play for a while. So, it got a turn with the new camera too.

Wow... where to start? Myrna saved my bacon tonight. I needed to make a couple of quick images with the new camera and lens. And my scheduled model bailed! Myrna to the rescue. She had 20 minutes between work and an appointment with the tax-man. All 20 were put to good use.

I had to push the ISO to 2000 and still only managed 1/80 sec. BUT, the new VR system really kicked butt! 400mm at 1/80th? Handheld? I'm liking it!

Wow... where to start? Myrna saved my bacon tonight. I needed to make a couple of quick images with the new camera and lens. And my scheduled model bailed! Myrna to the rescue. She had 20 minutes between work and an appointment with the tax-man. All 20 were put to good use.

I had to push the ISO to 2000 and still only managed 1/80 sec. BUT, the new VR system really kicked butt! 400mm at 1/80th? Handheld? I'm liking it!

I tried to shoot as tight as I could... even used the DX crop mode, but in the end, I felt like the pano-type crop worked best to eliminate all the ugly distractions (orange buckets, etc.)

I was at the Samy's Camera in Culver City, CA yesterday and created this image as an impromptu demo of the new lens. The dime was placed on a counter near the front door. I hand-held the camera. Focus was near it's minimum distance.

I am impressed by two different things here:
1) The lens does a wonderful job of showing even the smallest scratches and details.
2) The D5100 does a really great job at 3200 ISO! Much better than I thought it might.
