A granite tower in West Khasi Hills, Central Meghalaya. There have been unusually prolonged heavy rains this autumn in the North East. Running down the east face of Kyllang Rock (5400 ft) can be seen a waterfall that stops instantly as the rain stops.

Height of Kyllang Rock: 720 ft (220 m) above the pine clad shoulder.
Width of Kyllang Rock: 1,000 ft (300 m). It is about 15 kms from Mairang and 50 kms from Shillong. A good tarred road makes it possible to reach the base of this rock in just about 90 minutes.

Kyllang Rock is an imposing red granite dome that rises out of the rolling grass downs near the village of Mawnai . The view from the top is impressive, especially toward the Himalayas to the north during the winter months. The rock is accessible from the north and east, but is inaccessible from the nearly perpendicular southern flank. Kyllang Rock's steep southern side is steep granite, while the northern side has dense forests of rhododendrons and oaks upto about a third of the way up.

A folk tale says that the gods U Kyllang and U Symper, who lived on another similar structure, fought a great battle. The victor was U Kyllang, so Kyllang Rock stands proud compared to the abode of the vanquished U Symper, which is flatter.
