Long distance hauling with an e-Mundo and the bikes-at-work trailer

Tonight I made my first long-distance haul with our e-Mundo and a Bikes-at-Work
trailer. I stuffed our Mundo box with a collapsed freezer box and a lot of
other cardboard recycling and prepared to haul it a recycling drop point, 13
miles away in Fountain City, making for a 26 mile round trip. A second smaller
box was also full of recycling, as a third over-stuffed grocery bag of
recycling was in the Go-getter bag.

The trip there was a continous gentle uphill with some headwind, and of course
I had the load to carry on the way out. I made heavy use of the throttle as I
made my way through scenic Amish backroads to get there. I was pedaling as well
as using the assist, and averaged about 15.5 mph on the trip up-- I felt that
was respectably fast given the conditions.

I was watching my battery level closely, as I anticipated using nearly the full
10 Amp-hour charge on this single trip.

Surprisingly, about the time I arrived at the drop point the power in the
assist system dropped dramatically and then the system shut completely off, due
to apparant lack of battery, although it registered using just about 5 out of
10 amp-hours before cutting out. Previously we had recorded getting close to 9
amp-hours out of the battery, so that result surprised me. I though maybe something
just overheated, but it wouldn't turn back on.

At least at this point the trip was now generally downhill, and trailer was
unloaded, and the wind was at my back. All I had to do was pedal home about 150
lbs of bike and trailer. This part also seemed to go fast enough, altough the
speedometer was one of the features I lost when the battery died.

All-in-all it was a good experience, although I would definitely experiment in
the future with attaching as much as I can directly to the Mundo before adding
an additional 47 lb trailer to the mix. The trailer is definitely the best and
only way to haul some things, but it adds some significant some weight and
complexity to the system that needs to be considered. ( I was further reminded
of the value of simplicity when I got a flat on the trailer just a few blocks
from home. )

By adding about 15 minutes to my route to church, I can take the scenic route through the country. L and I did just that this morning. I think we'll keep repeating this experience.
