Preparing to head back home after winter evening grocery shopping trip

We went out to eat and stopped by the grocery on the way home.

I carried all the groceries on the Xtracycle (on the left), since the bakfiets is significantly heavier to begin with.

I took my 4 year old on her first single track ride. She had own bike, and I had rode my Xtracycle.

It worked pretty well. The longer well base is more likely to "bottom out" on log crossings, and the weight is noticeably on uphills, but it beats buying an extra bike for something I don't do very often!

Here we stopped for the requisite popcorn break.

Averaged 12.8 over 12.8 miles. Took an hour.

She's about 4.5 now, and did a great job on this trip. She helped on hills and pointed out the corn and soybeans along the way.

It's also a rare sighting of an Xtracycle without the racks installed.

I appreciate the racks are easily removed-- it gives me the option to carry around less infrastructure when I don't need it. The Bikes-at-Work trailer is another way to greatly expand hauling capacity.

After a ritual filling-of-the-water-bottles at the local spring, we set off to ride self-supported from Richmond, Indiana to Bloomington, Indiana.

Originally envisioned as two 60 mile days, the split ended up being 10 miles and 114 miles...

The open design of the Xtracycle Freeloaders was a great match for carrying home this wicker basket we picked up at a yard sale. We were easily able to strap it on, and then fill it with even more purchases.

This is Xtracycle's stoker bar kit.

They add a lot functionality for just a little weight.
The bars are particularly narrow compared to adult bars and come kid-size grips bre installed.

So far I'm a big fan, and so is my 4 year old daughter.

When printer ink costs more than a new printer

I already had a new skateboard, a shoe box and some other purchases on board when I went to buy printer ink.

It was going to cost about $90 to purchase new ink for the old printer. For that price I could get a new multi-function device with wireless pri ting and that came with ink. Replacement ink for the new printer was $10 to $20 instead.

It's times like these that I appreciate riding a cargo bike and especially the expandable crossover straps of the XtraCycle system.

Long distance bike tourists can developer rather strong and specific food cravings. Ellis woke up early and added an extra 6 miles to his 50+ mile day to swing by Square Donuts and pick up about 15 donuts, seen strapped to the Xtracycle rack here. I think he consumed about 5 for breakfast in addition to oatmeal, and then packed two or three more for the road.

He had worked up quite an appetite as part of bike tour from Philadelphia to San Francisco.

For the third time this day, I drank a 32 ounce Gatorade in one sitting. We were at mile 90, taking a break and contemplating the day ahead.

Until this point we had considered the possibility of stopping to camp and finishing in the morning. But with 24 miles left to go, the amount of effort involved in camping was competitive with the amount of effort to just ride on. We decided to try to ride on through and re-mounted our bikes to go
