The famous fish market in Bergen is a part of "Torget i Bergen" (Market in Bergen). Here you will also find fruit, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts, and souvenirs. The Fish Market is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Bergen.

Huldra

Taken at Kjosfossen Waterfall on the train journey from Myrdal to Flåm, Norway.

I put a similar shot (Waterfall Dancer) on Flickr as my first from Norway, back last August.

In today's shot Huldra is not dancing, but I prefer the horizontal framing as we see more of the rugged landscape around her...!

In Scandinavian folklore, the huldra (Norwegian, derived from a root meaning "covered" or "secret") is a seductive forest creature. Other names include the Swedish skogsrå or skogsfru (meaning "lady (ruler) of the forest") and Tallemaja (pine tree Mary). A male hulder is called a huldu, or in Norway a huldrekall. Her name suggests that she is originally the same being as the völva Huld and the German Holda.

The beautiful Kjosfoss waterfall is one of the many stops on the Flåm Railway, which has been a major tourist attraction since 1940. The distance from the Flåm station, where the cruise liners dock up to the Myrdal station, is about 20 km (about 12 miles). The train winds its way along the narrow valley, climbing 864.8 metres (about 2800 feet) through 21 tunnels.

The City Hall can aptly be described as Oslo's heart and soul. This is where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded.

The City Hall dominates Oslo's inner-city skyline, its austere style attracting both praise and criticism. Detractors joke that it resembles two large blocks of brown Norwegian goat's cheese (geitost), but leading Norwegian artists of their time decorated the large complex inside and out.

The carillon in the eastern tower rings every 15 minutes, and on the hour plays a tune, often seasonally inspired music by Norwegian composers like Edvard Grieg.

Bryggen, also known as Tyskebryggen (the German Wharf) is a series of Hanseatic commercial buildings lining the eastern side of the fjord coming into Bergen, Norway. Bryggen is on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites. The name has the same origin as the Flemish city of Brugge.

Throughout history, Bergen has experienced many fires, since, traditionally, most houses were made from wood. This was also the case for Bryggen, and as of today, around a quarter dates back to the time after 1702, when the older wharf side warehouses and administrative buildings burned down. The rest predominantly consists of younger structures, although there are some stone cellars that date back to the 15th century.

Angler fish (or Monkfish)

When I spotted this fish at the market in Bergen my first reaction was: "Yuk!!! There's no way I could eat a fish like that!".

Little did I know, when I Googled it, that I'd find out that this ugly monster is part of my regular diet!!! To be quite honest, monkfish is probably my favourite fish! But in Bergen they call it "Angler Fish", and I had no clue that this 'prehistoric' horrible thing was one of my favourite meals. Yukkie! Yuk!!!!

Monkfish is the English name of a number of types of fish in the northwest Atlantic, most notably the species of the anglerfish genus Lophius and the angelshark genus Squatina. The term is also occasionally used for a European sea monster more often called a sea monk.

Lophius has three long filaments sprouting from the middle of the head; these are the detached and modified three first spines of the anterior dorsal fin. As in most anglerfish species, the longest filament is the first, which terminates in an irregular growth of flesh, the esca. This modified fin ray is movable in all directions. This esca is used as a lure to attract other fishes, which monkfish then typically swallow whole. Experiments have shown, however, that whether the prey has been attracted to the lure or not is not strictly relevant, as the action of the jaws is an automatic reflex triggered by contact with the esca.

Monkfish grows to a length of more than 5 ft; specimens of 3 ft are common.

Fleischer’s is a modern hotel in Voss, but it is rich in tradition. Built in 1889 in the then popular Swiss style, the hotel quickly became popular with well-to-do tourists around the turn of the 19th century.

Today, Fleischer’s Hotel has 115 rooms with a total of 219 beds. The hotel has a fully-licensed bar and restaurant, where you can try the local cuisine.

Grass roof

Not all environment solutions involve modern technology or new ideas. Grass roofs on houses in Norway are one such case. Translated literally, torvtak is “turf roof.” For hundreds of years turf roofs have been popular in Norway.

No two turf roofs are the same. Some are bright green and almost velvety. Others are golden and look like they’re growing wheat or oats. A number of turf roofs have flowers mixed in with the grass, and a few have small trees.

The advantages of turf roofs are many. They are very heavy, so they help to stabilize the house; they provide good insulation; and they are long-lasting. Special skills and materials are required to prepare the roof for the turf topping.

Turf roofs in Norway are a tradition and you will see them everywhere. This is not some new architectural trend in London or New York!
